The Office of College Advancement is available to answer your questions about Planned Giving opportunities at HSC, but we have prepared some responses to some of the more frequently asked questions about our Planned Giving program as a way of supporting the College.
What is Planned Giving?
Planned Gifts are usually arranged now with a donor but received in the future by the College. Gifts can include a bequest in a will, a life insurance policy, or a charitable gift annuity, to name a few. Gifts may also include property such as real estate, securities or works of art.
Who can make a Planned Gift?
Anyone can make a planned gift, regardless of age, occupation, or financial means. Using the assets from your estate to realize philanthropic wishes is a very practical way of making gifts which can be transformational to a non-profit organization's future.
Why make a Planned Gift?
Workings together with HSC to establish a planned gift, you can leave a lasting legacy to improve educational opportunities for generations to come. Planned Giving is a way of apportioning some of your future assets, often with tax benefits to your estate, to realize your philanthropic ideals.

The Office of College Advancement will be pleased to work with you and your advisors to best meet our mutual philanthropic goals. We have information and literature on this topic that we would be happy to share with you.
Who can advise me about Planned Giving vehicles and how they will impact me financially?
You should consult with a financial advisor, a lawyer, a gift planner or an estate planning expert. These professional advisors are used to working with charitable and non-profit organizations such as HSC, to achieve maximum benefit for both parties in arranging a charitable gift.
What is the most popular Planned Gift?
By far, the most popular planned gift is a charitable gift or bequest made through your will.
What is an estate plan?
An estate plan is simply any plan for disposition of your estate assets with a second goal of minimizing expenses and taxes. The core of any estate plan is a will. A will primarily provides for smooth distribution of your assets to selected beneficiaries. It allows you to organize your affairs so your responsibilities are taken care of after your death.
What are the benefits of planning a gift in a will?
- It helps to maximize available tax, financial and estate benefits.
- It ensures that your personal and financial objectives are met.
- It ensures that your property is distributed according to your wishes.
- It enables you to increase your gift potential by looking at other ways of giving.
- It provides a lasting gift to Hillfield Strathallan College.
What is a deferred gift?
Deferred gifts are donations that are arranged now for completion at a later date. The two most common examples are bequests and life insurance.
What is an unrestricted gift?
Unrestricted gifts allow HSC to use your donation where it believes the need is greatest at the time the gift is realized. This kind of gift provides the College with the greatest flexibility, and allows us to respond to unexpected financial requirements or opportunities in the future.
What is a designated gift?
Designated gifts, as opposed to unrestricted gifts, are donations where a specific purpose is identified in advance by the donor and accepted by Hillfield Strathallan College. The Office of College Advancement will be pleased to work with donors to ensure philanthropic goals are met.
Can I keep my anonymity until my planned gift is realized?
Yes. At HSC we do recognize our donor support in such places as our Annual Report and on our website. However, we will always respect any requests for anonymity, during your lifetime and after should you wish it.
