Prefect Installation

On Friday, September 18, 2009 Senior School students participated in the College’s annual Prefect Installation Chapel Service. Fourteen Grade 12 students received their Prefect pins and ties in a service that included an energetic and highly entertaining performance from the Senior School Jazz Ensemble directed by Mr. Allan Gaumond. In his reading, Mr. Neibert emphasized the importance of community, while Dr. Matthews’s address focused on character and the powerful connection between leadership and service.
Participating in the installation of the College Prefects was Mr. Ron Bremner ’67, the recipient of this year’s Alumni of Distinction Award. While he was a student at HSC, Mr. Bremner certainly played an important leadership role, serving as Head Prefect or Head Boy, as well as captain of the football and hockey teams.
For most of his professional life, Mr. Bremner has been immersed in the world of communications, first with CFRB in Toronto, and later in Vancouver with CKNW/CFMI and BCTV. More recently, he served as President of the Calgary Flames and of the Saddledome. He currently owns and operates Gold Medal Consulting which specializes in leadership training, executive coaching, management consulting and motivational speaking.
Following the Prefect Installation Chapel Service, Mr. Bremner was recognized in the Artsplex as the recipient of this year’s Alumni of Distinction Award. He received a certificate, and in his honour, a chair will be placed in Lawson Hall. As well, the Ron Bremner Scholarship will be given to a graduating student in June of 2010.
In his address to Senior School students and a number of special guests, including former teachers Mr. Ted Helwig, Mr. Bob Neilson and Mr. Geoffrey Steel, Mr. Bremner spoke fondly of his time at the College and highlighted the positive impact that it had on his later life. He also elaborated on the importance of people skills, determination and tenacity. In telling the story of Billy Sherring, a Hamilton man who won a gold medal at the 1906 Olympic Games, he reinforced this message in an address that was warmly received by everyone in attendance.

As a result of the generous support of HSC families, through the activities of the Parents’ Association (PA), the Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign and other fundraising initiatives, HSC has been able to more than double its spending in support of educational technology in the past six years.
We now have 10 COWS (computers on wheels) and close to 50 SMART boards in operation, thereby providing both students and teachers with ready access to educational technology. “I don’t know of another school in the country that has made such rapid and significant progress in integrating educational technology into its classrooms, without resorting to an additional technology levy or fee. We should feel very proud of what we have accomplished” said Dr. Tom Matthews.
The PA Funding Committee meets annually with the Headmaster to discuss the various needs throughout the school. The PA Funding Committee then chooses which areas will be supported by the funds raised through its activities.
The Parents’ Association would like to thank all the families who have supported our events throughout the school, raising both funds and school spirit in the process!

HSC Homecoming Celebration, Saturday, October 3, 2009
This year’s Homecoming was by far the most polished Homecoming Celebration around! The beautiful marquee tent filled with House colours greeted each guest as they drove through our main gates. Inside the tent everyone enjoyed a selection of continental snacks and a premium lunch; Our guests were very impressed!
The Houses did an exceptional job this year with their fundraising; initiatives included a car wash, bake sale, critter corner, bouncy castle and an HSC favourite, the dunk tank.
The games were fantastic, overseen by Co-Directors of Athletics, Sylvia Griffin and Mike Steel. It was a beautiful day for outdoor sports; Mother Nature was kind and did not unleash a torrent until after the outdoor games were completed. The Senior School teams were very successful. Winners against Appleby included, Senior and Junior Girls’ Basketball, Junior Boys’ Volleyball, Junior Boys’ Soccer. The DII Girls’ Field Hockey team had a 1 -1 draw with Appleby. The Alumni Soccer Team defeated the present Senior Boys’ team to take the first ever Alumni Soccer Trophy. The Alumni Basketball game with alumni and current student players on mixed teams provided an exciting game, with the White squad winning the gold medals. The coaches were exceptional, and we would like to thank them for their commitment to their teams and for helping to make HSC’s Homecoming a resounding success.
The Middle School and Early Education results were equally outstanding, with the boys winning all but one tied game in soccer and the girls winning their game. The Junior Girls’ Basketball finished the day with a 1-1 split and won in Field Hockey. The boys had their only loss in Volleyball. Congratulations once again to all of our athletes!
Special thanks to Nick and Dawn Eveley of Eveley International for sponsoring the Homecoming Day, including our marquee tent; Mr. Jim Faulkner of Heritage Foods for his lunch donation and Mr. Gary Valeri for his donation of Tim Hortons refreshments.

The Alumni Welcome Back Dinner,
Honouring Class Years ending in “4” and “9”

The Alumni Welcome Back Dinner was hosted in Lawson Hall that night, bringing home over 160 alumni, faculty and retired faculty who delighted in connecting with friends.
The evening entertainment was magical… literally! Mayson Galoni our Grade 10 resident magician and stand-up comedian, inspired belly laughs from the audience, and delighted them with his prestidigitation. Dr. Gregory Burton and The Strathallan Singers, Caitlin Comeau-Jarvis, Natalie Sagar and Alexandra Bain followed, engaging everyone with their majestic sound and clever song selections which spanned the generations.
Homecoming 2009 was truly a success, one that would not have been made possible without the support of the sponsors, donors, volunteers, committee members, coaches, and staff. Together they helped create an outstanding day for everyone.

Tree Dedication at Homecoming

Homecoming saw the dedication of three trees and plaques in the newly naturalized Carolinian Arbour on the southwest campus.
Two smooth serviceberry trees Amelanchior laevis were dedicated to honour the graduation of Emmaline (’09) and Katherine (’06) Houston, with father Nick in attendance. A family dedication will be arranged for later.
About 14 members of the Grad Class of ’09 attended to see the dedication of a large red oak Quercus rubra donated as part of their grad gift to the College. This tree will be an anchor specimen for future extension of the naturalized area.
Plans are being developed to provide a cross-country running path around the campus, with naturalized savannah vegetation (spaced native trees with native grasses and wildflowers) bordering both sides. This path will provide a more aesthetic environment for training, add colour, diversity and habitat to the campus, and offset some of our College’s carbon footprint. Earth Day 2010 will be focused on student participation in this venture.
Anyone wishing to donate a tree as a memorial or to honour a member of our College community can contact Dr. Moffatt by e-mail at moffatt@hsc.on.ca or Laurie Lewis in the Advancement Office at lewis@hsc.on.ca
