Bring on the Bulldozers!

The ‘Transformation HSC’ project is making remarkable progress.  Construction for Phase I will commence this Spring, including  the MichaelG.DeGrooteSeniorSchool, the LearningCommons and a covered walkway to the existing facilities.

In February the HSC Board of Governors unanimously voted to begin construction on the Transformation HSC project at Hillfield Strathallan College, commencing with the construction of the Michael G. DeGroote Senior School and Student Learning Commons.

The unanimous decision by the Board of Governors has energized the remaining campaign. Chair, Mr. Paul Philp, voiced the congratulations of the entire Board to the HSC community for their incredible support. Following a three-year fundraising campaign the College has raised more than $24 million in donations and pledges towards this project. With these significant fundraising accomplishments, the College has now developed a viable financial plan to allow for Phase I construction to begin in the Spring of 2011. This Phased approach will allow for fundraising to continue, completing Phase II in the shortest delay possible. Phase II will add the College-wide community and athletic complex, as well as a heated walkway to connect the new facilities to our existing campus.

As trailers, bulldozers and fences appear on campus over March break, watch for more news and updates on these exciting times at HSC! An official groundbreaking ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 29.  Details and invitations to the HSC community will follow shortly.  Please mark your calendars and join us!

Anything Goes thrills audiences!

The Staff, Alumni and Parent musical, Anything Goes, under the direction of Graham Clements, performed on the HSC Artsplex stage at the end of January and was a resounding success. The performances were a delight as the blending of Cole Porter’s music, hilarious comedy, amazing dancing and wonderful singing made for a winning combination.

The musical was also a great opportunity for these three groups within the HSC community to come together with a common purpose. Great friendships were made and old ones rekindled as the cast worked together since last September on the production. The play was also more than a friend-raising endeavour, as all profits from the production were donated back to HSC to support the arts programs at the College.

“Musical theatre is always a great challenge for any group; finding the right musical is an even greater challenge. Anything Goes had all the elements that enticed our cast to work hard and yet have fun during the rehearsal process.” - Graham Clements, Producer

Model UN at Harvard

Visit with HSC Alumnus, Nina Sokolovic ‘10

From January 26 to 30, twelve of our best Model UN delegates flew to Boston to attend Harvard University’s Model United Nations conference. The conference housed approximately 3,000
students from all over the world, intent on honing their diplomatic skills and advancing the agenda of their assigned countries in various UN committees. HSC’s delegation represented a small African nation called Sao Tome and Principe, and students learned just how difficult it is for a poor country with scant resources to have a voice in international affairs. Although our delegates did not win the recognition they did earlier in the year at McGill University, Colin McEwen and Sean Cameron both gave their best diplomatic performances to date. Colin, with help from Ramya Kancherla, in a re-enactment of a 1980 General Assembly on the invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR, moved to oust the Soviets from discussions altogether.  Meanwhile Sean, on the Economomic and Financial Committee, championed for the economic development via education for the poorest countries in the world, and, like his counterpart in the real world, met significant resistance from the richest countries.

When not in committee the delegation took advantage of all that Boston has to offer, including its Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Aquarium, a Boston Bruins game and, of course, a tour of the Harvard campus led by HSC alumnus Nina Sokolovic ’10. Nina feels successful in her first year at Harvard, and attributes this success to great preparation from her HSC teachers, especially those in the Science department.

Congratulations to all of the delegates and thank you to Nina for taking the group under her wing on the Harvard campus!

Graduating Class of 2011

Our soon-to-be Alumni - where they are heading next year?

This year is our largest graduating class since 2003, the ‘double cohort year’. A total of 107 students have applied to universities in Canada, the U.S. and even the United Kingdom.
The June 2011 grads have met with our new Head of College, Mr.Ayotte, discussing opportunities, possibilities, ideas and strategies for their future. On average each student applied to five or more universities and/or programs each. This year more HSC students have applied to the Quebec, Atlantic and Western provinces than ever before.

So far, we have received some satisfying acceptances and scholarship offers. Naturally, good marks from last June indicated the strong academic potential of the students. All universities are eager to attract the strong students from HSC. U.S. applicants will be informed in April if MIT, Caltech, Stanford, Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth, Chapel Hill and Wisconsin-Milwaukee universities have accepted them.
.
There are forty-three universities in Canada. Each has its own specific programs and requirements and each provides a challenge and a perfect fit for individual students. There are no second or third-rankeduniversities in Canada. Different students are suited to different universities and depending on academic results, extra curricular commitments and activities, each student has an equal opportunity to be accepted in to the post-secondary school of their choice.

For complete statistics regarding applications to specific universities and programs, please click here.
