Over 20 years ago the vision of HSC parent Suzanne Shulman and HSC faculty members John Beaver and John McGuirk resulted in a Performing Arts series that was designed to enrich the Arts experience for the HSC community. Over the history of the series, artists such as the Tokyo String Quartet, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and the Canadian Brass have graced the Artsplex stage with their musicianship and passion.
Currently, along with bringing many renowned artists to the College, the Crescendo Concert Series also helps to fund an Arts Scholarship that allows a deserving student to study at HSC. The present HSC Arts Scholar is Grade 10 student Elizabeth Loughrey. She is a talented singer who will help to energize the vocal program at HSC.
An endeavour as successful as the Crescendo Concert Series is the result
of the tireless, passionate and dedicated work of many volunteers. The members of our community who give of their time and energies in order to ensure the success of the series deserve a great deal of recognition and thanks. Parents, volunteers, staff, students and supporters demonstrate year after year the value of a community that works together in order to provide an enriched Arts experience. Our current committee Chair, Valerie Parke, has taken on the huge job of managing all of the aspects of the Series, and for that we thank her.
Aristotle said, “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”
As we take time from our busy lives to stop, ponder and enjoy tonight’s performance, I am hopeful that the inward significance of the value of our HSC community will help to ensure a strong, thriving Crescendo Concert Series for years to come.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gregory Burton
