HSC Student Emmaline Houston wins the 2009 Hamilton Young Woman of Distinction Award

Last night, more than 500 people came out to honour 37 nominees in 10 different award categories. The women were honoured for their work in the arts, business, community activism, health, politics, education and volunteerism at the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards. This year, fifteen young women were nominated for the Young Woman of Distinction Award - among them, Emmaline Houston who was selected as the 2009 winner.
Emmaline has been involved in student government at HSC for the past four years. She is an accomplished flutist and actively involved in field hockey and rowing. She also provides leadership to the Environmental Club and participates in community outreach programs through the Senior School’s Social Action Committee. As the HCF YAC co-chair, she has overseen the reviewing of grant proposals resulting in over $80,000 being granted to Hamilton youth projects over the last three years. An inspired speaker, Emmaline recently presented at a national leadership conference in Montreal.
Her parents, Mr. Nick Houston and Dr. Wendy Hancock attended the evening, along with Tyler Cappadocia ’08. Dr. Matthews, Mrs. Zwolak, Mr. Neibert, Mrs. Guyatt and Mr. Peat also attended in support of Emmaline.
“Over the course of her time spent at HSC, Emmaline has emerged as a genuine student leader, a Young Woman of Distinction. We all celebrate the fact that she was recognized as such last evening”, said Mr. Peat, Assistant Head of Senior School.
Every year for the past 30 years, the Status of Women Committee of the City of Hamilton has presented the annual Woman of the Year Awards to ensure that the contributions of women to all aspects of community life would not be overlooked.
