Senior Vocal Ensemble Performs at Carnegie Hall
On April 1-4, thirteen members of the HSC Senior Vocal ensemble traveled to New York City to participate in the American National Youth Choir Festival at Carnegie Hall. The HSC singers received the invitation to participate in
the festival in May, 2010, when they earned the
praise of adjudicators at the Heritage Music Festival held in Chicago.
Approximately 400 students from high schools across the USA came to New
York to work under guest choral conductor Lynn Gackle. HSC was the only
Canadian school participating. The musicians rehearsed on Friday, and all
day Saturday in preparation for the Sunday evening gala concert at
Carnegie Hall. In between they managed to attend a performance of the
musical Chicago, travel to the WTC site and memorial display, cruise the
amazing New York harbour, and shop at Macy’s and other landmark stores.
The HSC students were immediately a novelty, being the only Canadians in
the American National Youth Choir. They were musical leaders, mature
performers, and fabulous ambassadors for HSC. Choir Director Kate Boose,
and Director of Arts, Gregory Burton, along with the HSC parents and
relatives that traveled to New York to attend the Carnegie Hall
performance were very proud of the confident HSC vocalists. HSC parents
described the concert as breathtaking, and more than a few tears were shed
upon hearing the sound of 400 voices in the acoustics of the great hall.
Thank you HSC singers for your talent, poise, and leadership!
