Appleby College Model UN – ACMUN Success!
On Wednesday, April 13, HSC’s Model United Nations team experienced its best MUN conference ever. The delegation to the sixth annual Appleby College Model United Nations (ACMUN) consisted of 36 students: 26 novice and 10 experienced delegates. After a full 12 hours of debate in 13 different committees, the team delivered HSC’s best MUN performance to date, winning a total of 12 awards.
James Serena gave the most interesting performance of the day, representing Libya to the Novice Security Council. Acting for the Ghadafi regime, he managed to convince the UNSC to lift the no-fly zone from Libya, and to strengthen diplomatic ties with North Korea. James was recognized as Best Delegate in his committee.
Ryan Jackson had the most difficult assignment of the day. He represented France on a re-enactment of the Security Council meeting of September 12, 2001. On this elite level committee, Ryan’s job, with the help of Mahnoor Saifi representing Tunisia and Trish Sawhney representing China was to convince the U.S. and the U.K. to exercise caution in their collective response to the infamous terrorist attacks of 9/11. Ryan was also recognized as Best Delegate in his committee.
Despite ‘playing up’ a level, debating on an intermediate committee for his rookie performance, Dan Biggs was recognized as Best Delegate to the European Union for representing France. Tina Zhou received the same award for representing New Zealand to the UN Committee on Women.
HSC had four delegates on Interpol: Jordan Karrys as Italy, Tristan Ruse as Venezuela, Rishi Goel as Vietnam and Sam Bader as China. Sam earned Best Delegate and Rishi Goel earned Outstanding Delegate (2nd place).
