HSC takes a byte out of electronic trash

In keeping with our commitment to “green initiatives” and our ongoing relationship with GreenBYTE, the College has donated 145 monitors and 9 computers to GreenBYTE, a program operated by the St. Leonard’s Society of Hamilton. The program recycles or refurbishes computers, printers and scanners and redistributes them to youth and families in low-income neighbourhoods.

The GreenBYTE Program encompasses two mutually supportive but distinct programs, the Computer Technology Program and the Employment Services Program. All donated computers are given to youth serving organizations in the Hamilton area at no cost to the recipient, with no cost support and repair for the life of the computer through their Child Connect Program, or are made available to families in the Hamilton area, who need a computer and may not be able afford one through our Bridging the Digital Divide Program.

The monitor replacements were part of our continued hardware renewal program and demonstrates our commitment to and management of IT resources at the College. The new units were scrutinized for their value, performance and energy efficiency  - an added “green”  bonus that will provide measurable power savings.
