To All Members of the HSC Community:
It is with great sadness that I announce that Mr. Doug Moore, a long-time faculty member here at Hillfield Strathallan College, died following a skiing accident on the weekend in British Columbia.
A graduate of McMaster University, the University of Guanajuato and the University of Toronto, Mr. Moore began his teaching career at HSC in 1986. Over the years, he taught a variety of courses, including art in the Middle and Senior Schools, as well as Senior School courses in Philosophy and World Religions. He also served as the staff advisor of the Boar-Pibroch, the HSC yearbook, and he pioneered our first e-learning course. Confined to a wheelchair for more than three decades, Doug was fiercely independent and pursued a lifelong passion for painting and travel. He was a gifted artist best known for his evocative paintings of Georgian Bay. Over the years, he also completed a number of portraits for the College of former Senior Masters, Headmasters and Headmistresses. In addition, Doug loved to travel and circumnavigated the globe on more than one occasion. Since 2008, he had been on leave from the College.
Doug and his partner, Dr. Marg Woods, had been in Whistler to enjoy the paralympic games. While touring the mountain on a sit-ski, he fell and hit his head. He was sent to Vancouver where he later died in ICU on the morning of Sunday, March 21.
On behalf of the entire HSC community, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Mr. Moore’s family and loved ones. He was a gifted artist and inspiring educator who will be sorely missed by his colleagues and former students. We are indebted to Doug for his substantial contribution to the College and will remember him fondly.
A memorial service for Mr. Moore will take place in the HSC Artsplex beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 with a reception to follow. All members of the HSC community are invited to attend.
Doug's family has asked that donations in lieu of flowers be made to Hillfield Strathallan College's Visual Arts program.
