The Colin B. Glassco Foundation receives donation from HSC

February 5 and 6, 2009 were two very special days at HSC as Mr. Colin B. Glassco flew from Calgary to visit with us. In his various presentations to the Middle, Junior and Montessori Schools, and to Mr. Whittard’s World Issues classes, Mr. Glassco focused on the importance of clean water, especially as a support for the children who receive trachoma surgery in the Gwembe Valley in Zambia. The water wells that the Glassco Foundation digs provide clean water for drinking and cleansing, and the run-off has encouraged a variety of beneficial crops to spring up.

In support of the Colin B. Glassco Charitable Foundation for Children, HSC held a College-wide alternate dress day on January 22, and sold environmentally friendly water bottles throughout the month of January. Over 600 water bottles have been sold to date!

Mr. Glassco also attended a pizza party on Thursday afternoon with the Senior School Glassco Foundation Chapter where he met 25 energetic Grade 9 and 10 students who make up the committee. This committee was created in the spring of 2008, and is steered by Sean Cameron, Nisha Goel, Zoe Cameron, Emily Ower and Julia Falco. The Committee has held a Coin War, a 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge, a dance and school supply drive, several bake sales and canvassed the East Hamilton/Wentworth Rotary Chapter for funding.

The initial goal of raising money for a well was achieved in the fall of 2008. Current plans include paying for the breakfasts of the children who reside at the Chishawasha Orphanage just outside Lusaka in Zambia.

On Friday morning, Mr. Glassco attended Chapel where he received a cheque for $1,500.00 from Mr. Jim McDonnell (grandfather to Sean Cameron) and Ms Milena Balta on behalf of the East Hamilton/Wentworth Rotary Chapter. Mrs. Judith King-Siganski, the Past President of the Alumni Association and current Co-Chair of the Golf Classic was accompanied by Madison Hough and Elias Larrazabal from Montessori, Megan Emanuele and Christian Kwiecien-Delaney from the Junior School, David Mancini and Curtis Orth from the Middle School, and the Senior School Steering Committee to represent the four schools for the College-wide initiative as they participated together to present Mr. Glassco with a cheque for a total of $18 706.34!

Special thanks to Ms. Hourigan, Ms. Moseley, Mrs. Rocca, Ms. Morris and Mr. Zelinsky for organizing the College-wide water bottle initiative and alternate dress day. In addition, thank you to all the constituents at Hillfield Strathallan College who participated in various ways to make Mr. Glassco’s visit so enjoyable and memorable.
