The sun shone as hundreds of students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and other guests made their way to the edge of Gibson Field on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 to view the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Michael G. DeGroote Senior School.
In attendance were lead donor, Mr. Michael G. DeGroote and members of his immediate family: sons Gary '74 and Tim '78, daughter-in-law and current parent, Peggi DeGroote, grandson Devin '04 and granddaughter Victoria, Montessori 8. Other VIP guests included Mr. Ronald V. Joyce of Tim Hortons fame and Patrons of HSC, Bill Young '35 and Judge Colin Lazier '35. |
Construction is set to begin in the coming weeks, and construction trailers are already on campus. The new facilities, including a covered walkway linking the new to the old campus and the Learning Commons, are set to open in September 2012.
Phase II of the 'Transformation HSC' project will include a College-wide athletic and community centre, as well as an additional enclosed and heated walkway to the rest of the existing campus. Phase II will move to the Board of Governors for approval when fundraising has been completed on the remaining $13.5 million of the project.
