Jerred Bapty earns his Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Award

In order to achieve his Silver level, Jerred volunteered at both HSC, helping with the Middle School play, and in the community by coaching young sailors.

In order to fulful his Skills requirement, Jerred participated in two plays at HSC, 42nd Street and Rumours enjoying his time with his fellow actors.

For the Physical Recreation component, Jerred completed his Red Cross Bronze Medallion for swimming, and was a part of the High Performance Race Team learning to sail double-handed for the first time. He and his partner were first in their category at Canadian Olympic Regatta in Kingston, and he achieved his Bronze IV, Bronze V and Silver Canadian Yachting levels.

Last but not least, Jerred went on a truly adventurous journey by sailing on the tall ship, Playfair (Tall Ships Toronto Brigantine Expedition) from Chicago to Goderich. His most memorable moment was being on watch at 2:00 a.m. singing to stay awake, and feeling that the stars were so close he could reach out and touch them. The journey was shortened somewhat by the impending arrival of Hurricane Earl. With swelling seas and high winds, the Playfair raced for shelter in Goderich arriving safely with all hands on board.

He was awarded his Silver level pin on on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Queen’s Park by  Mrs. Jennifer J. Reynolds, President of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, and The Honourable David C. Onley, O.ONT., Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
