Lessons Learned From Highly Effective Teachers

In Teaching As Leadership, author Steve Farr identifies that excellent teachers continuously increase their effectiveness ”by reflecting critically on their progress, identifying roots causes of problems, and implementing solutions.”

For the CIS-OISE*Action Research project on assessment practices, four HSC faculty collaborated to examine current practices about assessment and design new models for classroom use. (Joanna Blackwell – Montessori, Shailau Spivak – Junior, John Hannah- Middle, Ryan Baker- Senior) Over 15 months, the teachers attended workshops at OISE to expand their knowledge of effective assessment strategies and met as a team to develop tools and resources to use with students to enhance their achievement and ability to self-assess.

The outcomes of their research have had a direct impact on improving the quality of the student experience in all areas and will be embedded in ongoing practice.  The participants provided leadership by sharing their new findings with colleagues at OISE on April 30 and will provide workshops in August at HSC. Supporting teachers as professional learners will ensure that our focus on student-centred learning is relevant and meaningful.
