Campus Naturalization Junior School Project
For many years, the motto of environmentalists has been for each of us to think globally and to act locally. Our Earth Day initiative at HSC does just that. Last year’s Earth Day activities focused on campus naturalization, when more than 1,500 seedlings of native grasses and wildflowers were planted. This year students in the Junior School have been focusing on an animal species that can reside within the naturalized area.
This spring, each classroom in the Junior School has hosted Painted Butterfly larvae. Students have been involved in their care and growth. Many of the caterpillars have now metamorphosed and as the weather becomes warmer, the students will gather as a school to release them in our campus naturalized zone.
In addition, students have contributed funds to support the World Wildlife Fund’s Monarch Butterfly Habitat Preservation project. As the students contributed, their names were written on paper butterflies and added to the bulletin board outside the Junior School.
Through this project we hope that our students will gain valuable knowledge about empowerment and recognize that they can make a difference in the world today.
