HSC Alumni of Distinction Award Recipient a Speaker at Rotary
On Thursday, September 17, 2009 Mr. Ron Bremner ’67 was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Hamilton lunch meeting, held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Ron was in town in advance of his induction on September 18, 2009 as the Alumni Award of Distinction recipient at the College, and kindly agreed to speak at the club where Dr. Tom Matthews and Adrienne Davidson both serve as Rotarians.
Also in attendance were Mr.Bob Neibert, Head of Senior School and a Rotarian in Dundas, Rotarian and HSC Alumnus, Mr. David Simpson ’73, Mr. Ron Foxcroft, current HSC parent, Club President and former HSC Parent, Marie Robbins, and HSC students Caroline McKenna, Brandon Clark and the new HSC/Rotary Exchange student, Anne Sophie Jousse.
Mr. Bremner captivated the audience with stories of his early days growing up in Hamilton, his gratitude for the good work done by Rotary worldwide (especially with respect to its commitment to eradicate Polio globally), as well as a wonderful, and very little-known story about a 98lb., working-class Hamiltonian who went to the Olympic Games in Athens in 1906. Billy Sherring’s story of overcoming financial challenges and his focus on winning was captivating when described by Ron. Of equal interest was the news that he is part of a group arranging to film, for the first time, the story of Billy Sherring. One of the club’s members, of Greek origin, commented that the story of Canadian Billy Sherring was actually taught to Greek students in school as an example of dedication, focus and achievement.
