Reuse, Reduce, Recycle – HSC and Greenbyte…Keeping it Green

As consumers, many of us have faced the problem of what to do with our computer equipment and printers when it is time to replace them. Faced with a similar dilemma, HSC began working with Greenbyte in 2007 to find a recycling solution for the computer equipment the College was replacing as part of its technology enhancement and renewal program.
This past summer, the College donated 73 computers to Greenbyte. Greenbyte is a program of The St. Leonard's Society of Hamilton, a registered charitable not-for-profit organization operating in Hamilton, Ontario. Greenbyte distributes computer systems with Internet access to low income families with school-aged children in the Hamilton area by recycling donated computer equipment.
“Our partnership with GreenByte supports a valuable community service and is in keeping with the College’s green initiatives. The donated items are diverted from our solid waste stream and reused to create viable technologies while waste items may be differentiated for further recycling initiatives,” said Chris Kwiecien.
