HSC defeated Holy Trinity 17-15 in the CISAA Championship game on Saturday June 23rd 2009 in a close and exciting finish.

Congratulations to Cole Anderson, Justin Bauman, David Cho, Mark Emanuele, Yaseen Khaled, Daniel Kodarin, Mykola Kondra, Jamie Macpherson, Liam Matthews, Colin McParland, Caitanya Pandith, Christian Phillips, Sherif Ramadan, Hayden Sahid, Hasan Saleemi, Gagan Sandhu, Young Sohn, Philip Stefanow, Evan Stott, Alexander White.

The final game of the U16 rugby season took the team back to the site of our only defeat. With parents watching and a nervous coach, the players took the field with no subs on the bench. Fifteen players up against a good side who had ample subs, this was sure to be a test of all they learned.

We started well and secured a 3 point lead after some intense play. After some tricky running and having a player sent off for 10 minutes we lost two quick tries. Luckily they missed both kicks. The team then stepped up and put pressure on the opposition and with two minutes remaining scored and converted a great team try.
With 10 – 10 at the start of the second halve, we again, for the most part, played inside the opposition halve. Another missed tackle and some good running saw Holy Trinity score again but missed the kick so made the score 15 – 10.

6 minutes to go and a quick restart that caught HT napping saw our team get back on the offensive. After losing the ball in a ruck, Sherif put pressure on the fly half. As he passed the ball, Sherif managed to tip it onto an approaching player. The ball bounced off his shoulder and continued forward to land right into Sherif’s hands with a wide open field in front of him. He was chased down as he sprinted to the line but had the pace to keep in front and score a try in the middle of the posts.

Up stepped Jamie who had not missed a kick and coolly slotted the conversion and put us into the lead 17-15. With minutes to go HT was awarded a penalty, if they make the kick they take the win. Up steps the kicker, takes the kick and HT think they have it. After the Referee consults the touch judges he declares the kick no good.
Many minutes of injury time later and with most players injured but battling bravely the final whistle blows and Hillfield with the championship.

A special thanks from all the players and coaches for the support from the parents and grand parents who have come out to our games. The boys have had a tremendous season and your support encouraged them greatly.
A final thank you to all the players for putting your bodies on the line when it counted. You have made it such a nerve racking but enjoyable season. Well done boys, you deserve it.

Coach Edgar
