| Sasha Paikin takes the cake! |

During a recent Raptors game, attended with the Foxcroft family, Montessori student Sasha Paikin was asked to participate in a skit with “The Raptor”, the team’s costumed mascot. Being a week shy of her birthday, Sasha was presented with a birthday cake from "The Raptor". On his way to deliver the cake, an Orlando Magic "fan" (actually part of the skit) blocked "The Raptor's" path so he could sing the praises of the Magic and get his face on the scoreboard. The results of the post cake delivery from "The Raptor" are shown in the photo, as Sasha played her part to perfection!Seems the only declared HSC witness on hand was none other than Ms. deFreitas, who complimented Sasha on her technique first thing Monday morning!

| HSC Students finalists in the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce's Youth Volunteer Awards for 2008 |
On Monday, January 26, 2009, The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce will select its Youth Volunteer for 2008 presented by the Hamilton Spectator. Three HSC students, Emmaline Houston, Mina Kazemi and Alison Ower are among the finalists for this prestigious award. The award recognizes dedicated and extensive volunteerism in local communities and beyond.
It is no surprise that HSC students embrace and embody one of the College’s core values “to better the world” through community service. What may surprise you is the depth and commitment these three young women have demonstrated in their altruistic activities. They serve as role models for us all and remind us what can be achieved when we work in the service of others. Read More!

Environmental Responsibility: “Zooming” in on Energy Conservation |
Several years ago a character called Cosmic Zoom visited HSC students here on “Sunship Earth” and left a lasting legacy of conservation. Named after this character, HSC’s Cosmic Zoom is a student initiative that ensures that lights are switched off in the Middle School. Grade 6 science teacher Nancy Wands explains:
“Cosmic Zoom began several years ago, after one of the annual Grade 6 trips to YMCA Camp Wanakita. Students participate in a program called Sunship Earth™ where they learn about the environment and how living things interact with one another to keep our planet healthy. Part of the program covers the impact of humans on our planet and what we can do to lessen our impact. Saving energy is one of these. At camp, a character called Cosmic Zoom, checks the kids’ cabins to make sure they have turned off their lights and heat when they leave the cabin in the morning.” Read More!
