Inspirational Event at the Art Gallery of Hamilton |
Upcoming Events |

At first, it seemed as though the weather did not want to cooperate on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 but the heavy snowfall could not dampen the spirits of those that enjoyed a cocktail reception and private tour of the extraordinary H.S. Southam exhibit, Inspirational at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, presented by Hillfield Strathallan College.
Through this event, HSC was able to celebrate its strong ties to the Southam family. Many names that we recognize, such as the Holtons, the Balfours, the Baxters and the Glasscos are, in one way or another, descendants of the Southam family tree. In fact, Audrey Southam was the first Headmistress of Strathallan School from 1968-72 and her ornate maple desk is still being used by Dr. Matthews today.
The evening began with introductory remarks by Dr. Matthews, who then introduced the Senior Curator of the AGH, Tobi Bruce. Ms. Bruce discussed the Gallery’s acquisition of this outstanding collection and explained that H.S. Southam gave more artwork to the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the city in which he grew up, than any other city in Canada. At the core of his collection are not only paintings from the Group of Seven, which includes Lawren Harris, but also from esteemed artists such as Emily Carr and Tom Thomson.
When asked why he donated so many pieces to so many galleries across Canada, Harry Southam responded, “I give, partly, to encourage others to give”. Mr. Southam is a true philanthropist and a great example for future generations.

Rise and Shine Leadership Breakfast
The Tim Horton's Rise & Shine Leadership Breakfast will be hosted by Hillfield Strathallan College on Friday March 6, 2009, and will highlight the emerging partnership between HSC and City Kidz. As a major part of City Kidz' fundraising for the coming year, the event aims to raise $25,000 in order to provide the City Kidz’ Saturday activity program with two more buses, further expanding their highly distinctive fleet.
The buses will enable them to add more routes to their safe, no-cost transportation, and allow as many as 200 additional children to attend the Sherman Playhouse Theatre in Hamilton’s inner city.
The Rise & Shine event will include a delicious array of hot and cold breakfast items, and musical entertainment by the HSC Jazz Ensemble, as well as prizes and keynote speakers. LEARN MORE

Environmental Responsibility: Biodiversity and the Carolinian Classroom |
Within the College’s vast campus there is a small naturalized area nestled between the Page and Young Buildings. It is a mini Carolinian forest planted fifteen years ago by Dr. David Moffatt and a small group of students. “My first motivation was to make the environment healthier,” says Dr. Moffatt, who teaches Senior School biology. But along with the birds and rabbits, teachers and students have found their way to this serene native garden.
Dr. Moffatt, a recipient in 2008 of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, admits that the project raised a few hackles in the early years because it broke with the accepted culture of manicured suburban spaces. Now, with widespread movements to lower carbon footprints and a concern for “nature deficit” in children, the Carolinian forest is widely viewed as a small but valuable campus asset.
The garden is used by many of the faculty to enhance student learning. One example is Grade 7 science teacher John Hannah’s lesson in biodiversity. Using the Carolinian garden, he initiated a self-directed project, where students would observe, begin to learn about, and finally pursue their own line of inquiry inspired by the naturalized area. Rhythms of the Drum |
On February 4, Hand Drumming expert Mr. Sydney Read came to HSC to give workshops to the Senior School music students. Mr. Read demonstrated various drumming techniques, as well as other percussion instruments native to Africa and South America.
The students participated in a Drum Circle and experienced the many benefits of this type of performance. In addition to the musical benefits, research has documented benefits such as stress relief, improved communication and listening skills, and safe self expression. Dr. Burton is hoping to work with Mr. Read to establish an HSC Drum Circle as an activity next year.
In the meantime, you can bid on a Corporate Drum Circle Package on HSC-bay. The 1-1/2 hour session can accommodate a group size up to 30 people and is a unique team building opportunity. Click on the link to view this item. https://www.hsconlineauction.on.ca/item.php?id=138

CGA Ontario Competitions
|
Several Grade 12 accounting students have recently begun preparing for 2 province-wide competitions to be held in May, 2009. As part of their preparation, they are completing a series of monthly online quizzes offered by CGA Ontario. Tim Wang scored perfect on January's quiz. Congratulations Tim!
Tim and his fellow classmates currently studying The Canadian Securities Course are about to lead 3 additional business competitions. One group will recruit and lead a team to enter McMaster University's High School Business Challenge, organized by HSC parent Mandeep Malik. A second group will lead the Senior School through a stock market competition. Finally, a third group will mentor Grade 9s and 10s in a financial literacy competition run by InvestorEd, a department of the Ontario Securities Commission.

Giving a Living Memorial and Helping the Environment

Last spring the Senior School Environment Club received a POET grant (Protecting Our Environment Together) from Hamilton Community Foundation, to start a process of reforestation of unused parts of the campus with native Carolinian trees and other plants. This “Carolinian Arbour” is designed to beautify the campus, protect rare tree species native to the area, provide improved habitat for birds and other wildlife (especially migrants), enhance the experience of walking or running on the campus with shade, colour and variety, provide an educational resource, and reduce the school’s carbon footprint. Our long term goal is to provide corridors of trees along the slopes, between the playing fields, and along corridors where people move through the campus.
Staff donations had raised another $500 on the death of Dr. Moffatt’s father to commemorate his life with a tree, and we combined the two initiatives on Earth Day 2008, planting a cluster of five Carolinian trees and native grasses, with identification plaques and a memorial stone, east of the staff parking lot. The result was pleasing enough that many people suggested we extend the opportunity to our constituencies to donate dedicated living memorials to loved ones who are no longer with us. READ MORE

The HSC Canada Running Club
|
Imagine arriving on campus at 6:45 a.m. That’s what the students of the HSC Canada Running Club have been doing since November 11, 2008. Inspired by a Canadian hero, Terry Fox, the HSC Canada Running Club has been tracing Terry’s footsteps with the enormous goal of running all the way across Canada.
The Club started with a mere five dedicated members, but has grown to almost twenty students ranging from Grades 5 to 7 as well as several staff members. Most of the students are still half asleep when they arrive in the cold, long hallways of HSC and usually wake up after their first long lap. Club members run a four-hundred meter loop inside the school hallways and are looking forward to the spring and warmer temperatures when the team can move outside and enjoy the beautiful sunshine and the early morning fresh air.
The students enjoy the opportunity to run, walk and socialize as they work towards their goal. The team started their journey in St. John’s Newfoundland and are currently in the province of New Brunswick, having run a whopping two-thousand kilometres. The team hopes to complete their goal of crossing Canada by spring 2010. The HSC Canada Running Club is always looking for new members and you are invited to come out on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Hope to see you soon!
