Congratulations to the U13 Boys’ Basketball team winners of this year’s CAIS U13 National Basketball Tournament held at Strathcona Tweedsmuir School near Calgary, Alberta. This is an annual tournament involving 16 schools from across the country for students at the Grade 7 level in the Canadian Association of Independent Schools.
There were three days of intense basketball competition beginning on Thursday, February 5, 2009. The Colin B. Glassco Foundation receives donation from HSC
February 5 and 6, 2009 were two very special days at HSC as Mr. Colin B. Glassco flew from Calgary to visit with us. In his various presentations to the Middle, Junior and Montessori Schools, and to Mr. Whittard’s World Issues classes, Mr. Glassco focused on the importance of clean water, especially as a support for the children who receive trachoma surgery in the Gwembe Valley in Zambia. The water wells that the Glassco Foundation digs provide clean water for drinking and cleansing, and the run-off has encouraged a variety of beneficial crops to spring up.
In support of the Colin B. Glassco Charitable Foundation for Children, HSC held a College-wide alternate dress day on January 22, and sold environmentally friendly water bottles throughout the month of January. Over 600 water bottles have been sold to date! READ MORE

HSC Musicians advance to Nationals after outstanding performances at the Golden Horseshoe MusicFest |
On February 17 and 19 ensembles from the Senior School performed at the Golden Horseshoe MusicFest at Redeemer College. Over 100 bands from Mississauga to Niagara Falls participated in the festival. Bands perform assigned repertoire for a group of adjudicators, receive written and taped adjudications, and are then rated on a scale of Gold, Silver, Bronze, or participation award.
The HSC Wind Symphony was the first group to perform. Although a number of students were unable to make the performance due to illness, the HSC musicians pulled through with an excellent performance, and received a Gold rating from the adjudicators with an invitation to the National MusicFest. The judges commented on the group’s warm sound and musical phrasing.

| In the words of a Champion… |
We currently sit at 220 donors to the HSC annual campaign, on the way to reaching our goal of 500 donors by June 30th, 2009. Nine Excelsior Champions (see below) are waiting in the wings to fulfill their challenge and donate an additional $45,000 to the campaign. We are only 280 donors away from achieving our goal.
George McCarter, one of our Excelsior Champions for 2008-2009, explains his inspiration for giving;
“HSC is essential to the future growth of new business into the Hamilton area by providing a world class independent school for potential entrepreneurs and executives. My daughter Brittney’s career aspirations are to be either a teacher or a school administrator. She would love nothing more than to be a part of the future of Hillfield Strathallan College.”
Our HSC community includes approximately 800 families and 2300 alumni, so we believe our goal of 500 donors should be attainable.
If you have already made a gift to this year’s Excelsior Campaign, we thank you. Giving amounts are an individual choice, but we hope you will consider becoming a donor to HSC at your own level of comfort. Participation is the key. Please click here to download a donation form. Excelsior brochures and donation forms are also available in the Rotunda and the Main Office, or by contacting the Advancement Office at ext 161.
We wish to thank our nine Excelsior Champions for 2008-2009:

DR Mission Trip Planned for March Break |
During March 12-March 26, 2009, Spencer Meens, Caroline McKenna, Claire Pilon-Robertson, Brianna Schatz, Megan Husband, Deborah Liendo Kaufman,
Yiyong Lok and Mrs. Melissa Kirkpatrick will be venturing down to the Dominican Republic on a mission trip.
They will be working in various small communities around Moca, near Santiago and around Puerto Plata, learning about others, themselves, their partners, the Dominican culture, and issues of third-world development. Their goal is to build as many schools as possible and help out within the community (painting, playing, aiding and building).
Over the past few weeks, they have been running fundraisers and collecting all types of donations to bring down to the DR (Cash donations and item donations are still welcome). This program has been running at HSC for many years and will continue to run based on the success and good memories from previous years.

Regional Brain Bee Contest at McMaster |
Q. Approximately how many neurons does the brain contain? A. 100 billion
Q. Name the surgical procedure that destroys part of the basal ganglia and helps Parkinson’s patients? A. Pallidotomy
Six HSC Grade 11 and Grade 10 students participated in the Annual Brain Bee Competition at McMaster University. They have been preparing for the contest for a while, broadening their knowledge about the brain and neuroscience, and behaviour in general.
They were among 84 competitors from Southern Ontario each eying the possibility of a spot in the Canadian National Brain Bee competition and a chance to advance to the International Brain Bee Competition. The girls answered all thirty-five multiple choice questions and later watched the five finalists through their oral exam. A Grade 11 student from Iroquois Ridge School in Oakville won the contest.
The department of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour at McMaster invited the participants to see various labs and meet with the researchers there. Our students commented how good it was to meet and talk with others interested in the field of science.
The students realized that they will need to start soon to prepare for next year’s Brain Bee. Their studies in Biology here at the College will no doubt help them and, by working diligently, they will hopefully look forward to another opportunity to participate again next year.

Heart & Stroke Activity Day |
On Thursday, February 12, 2009, HSC attempted its first Heart and Stroke Activity Day, College-wide, to rave reviews from students and a wonderful experience for all. Students signed up for an activity and participated in some form of physical activity for 2 hours in the afternoon, a play on the Heart and Stroke’s Jump Rope for Heart.
Options included ball hockey outside, basketball, extreme dodgeball, martial arts, fitness, skipping, yoga, dance, and a fun auction relay which involved completing various teamwork tasks to earn points.
Special thanks to Mrs. Nancy Rocca from the Middle School for organizing this great day.
