The Tim Hortons Rise & Shine 4 City Kidz Leadership Breakfast, hosted by HSC on Friday, March 6, 2009 was a phenomenal success. The doors opened at 7:00 a.m. and in over 90 minutes, approximately 250 breakfasts were served by numerous dignitaries from the Greater Hamilton Community.

Together with City Kidz, HSC’s student-led Social Action Committee, under the leadership of Alison Ower, reached their goal to raise $25,000 for City Kidz. The last minute donation of George McCarter tipped the scales and helped reach this year’s target.

The money will be used to purchase two more buses to expand its Saturday activity program. The buses will provide free transportation for as many as 200 more children so they can attend the Sherman Playhouse Theatre in Hamilton’s inner city. It has 800 children at a time attending programs each Saturday.

City Kidz is a local charitable organization providing children from 6 to 12 with games and songs in a safe, fun and interactive environment, teaching them about good life decisions. It tries to lay the foundation and attitude in young children to enable them to reach their potential.

Success for Rise & Shine

HSC named top fundraising school in Ontario for
2008 Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Campaign

On Friday, March 6, 2009, Cathy Memah, UNICEF Ontario made a very special presentation to our students during morning Chapel. A special plaque was awarded to the College to acknowledge its outstanding efforts on behalf of the 2008 Trick-or-Treat Campaign and its contribution of $13,794.32 to the Schools for Africa programme in Malawi and Rwanda.

The College was named top fundraising school in Ontario and second in Canada. “The UNICEF project was a student-led initiative that really took off over the course of the fall term.  It involved teachers and students from all four schools and achieved a result that exceeded our expectations.  I am very proud of what our students accomplished”, said Dr. Matthews.

Since the UNICEF Halloween campaign was launched in 1955, Canadian children have raised more than $96 million to help save and enhance the lives of children in need around the world. The tradition of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF continues to be the most popular and engaging Halloween fundraising activity undertaken annually by children and schools across Canada.

UNICEF is the world’s leader for children, working in 156 countries and territories to save, protect and enhance the lives of girls and boys. UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, promotes quality basic education, protects children from violence, exploitation and AIDS, and is the world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries.

Season of Champions

The Under 13 Boys’ Basketball team successfully completed a great season winning the CISAA Championship on March 7, 2009.  In the semi-final game, the boys defeated St. Andrew’s College 57 to 53. In what can only be described as a barn-burner, HSC went on to defeat Upper Canada College 44 to 42 to win the championship.

The Under 12 Boys’ Basketball team lost a very close game in the semi-finals before going on to win the consolation final.

Congratulations to all the team members and their coaches for a fantastic season.

EXCELSIOR CAMPAIGN - Inching closer to our goal…

With 225 current donors to the HSC Excelsior Annual Campaign, we continue to inch closer to our goal of 500 donors. If you have already made a gift to this year’s Excelsior Campaign, we thank you.

Our Champions are poised and ready to contribute an additional $45,000 to the campaign, but only if we reach a total of 500 donors by June 30, 2009.

Examples of how your donations make a difference:

  • Integrating technology into the classroom with e-learning software, web-based programming and additional computer labs
  • Upgrades in the Arts program, particularly the need to purchase large musical instruments, such as tubas, baritone saxophones and pianos
  • Expanding the Outdoor Education program with the purchase of backpacks, tents and camping gear for future expeditions

The amount of your gift is an individual choice, and every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference to us all.  Participation is the key.  We need your support to meet the Champions’ Challenge.

Junior School and Senior School students team up to deliver food to Welcome Inn Emergency Food Pantry

For the past week, students in the Junior School have been collecting food for Welcome Inn Emergency Food Pantry on Wood Street, in Hamilton’s north end. The food drive was part of the Junior School’s theatrical production ‘Food For Thought’ presented this past Wednesday. The idea was to connect the children to the production’s ‘food theme’ through a tangible activity while helping others in their community. More than 356 pounds of food were donated prior to Wednesday and more was received during the two performances.

On Monday, March 9, eight Grade 11 and 12 students, accompanied by Mrs. Rogers, delivered the food donated by the Junior School students and volunteered for the day at the food bank. The students unloaded and sorted four skids of donated food breaking it down into manageable packages for distribution to food bank clients. READ MORE

Student-to-Student Uniform Sale

It’s April and the last Student-to-Student Uniform Sale for this academic year will be held on Wednesday April 8, 2009 from 3:00-5:30 p.m. in the Page Gym.  It is your chance to replace any of your student’s uniforms that he/she have either outgrown or lost.  There will be plenty of bargains so don’t miss out.

The Student-to-Student Uniform Sale is a fundraiser organized by the HSC Parents’ Association. We accept donations of clean, gently used clothing from parents and then sell it for greatly reduced prices. We do not take items on consignment. Proceeds from sales are directed back to the school to support our children’s learning environment.

Volunteers are essential to the success of the Student-to-Student Uniform Sale.  If you or your family can volunteer on April 7, 2009 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. and/or on April 8, 2009 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and/or 4:00-6:00 p.m., please contact Karen Price at 905-383-1333 and via email at k.price@sympatico.ca or Debbie Demers at 905-332-9007 and via email at ddemers5@cogeco.ca

Local builder, New Horizon Homes, wins two prestigious national awards

Alumni Nicola Smith ‘84 and husband Dave Smith '84 along with New Horizon Homes’ owner and HSC current Parent, Jeff Paikin ’80 (children Alexa, Natasha and Sasha), are justly proud of their joint project to build an environmentally friendly home on the Niagara Escarpment in Grimsby.

Now their shared commitment to this exciting project has been recognized by the Canadian Home Builders Association at their annual Sales & Marketing awards ceremony on February 28, 2009 in Quebec City. This truly green home; one which incorporates energy efficiency, eco-friendly products, wind turbines, low-E windows, wood-like products that use recycled and reclaimed plastic and the use of solar energy for heat and light, to name a few was designed by local architect and former HSC parent, Joanne McCallum of McCallum Sather.

New Horizon Homes, a Hamilton-based builder of single-detached and multi-residential homes, won the CHBA’s first ever Green Home Award which is given to a new home builder or developer member for outstanding environmental performance in a new single-detached home. The company also won a Home Renovation Award in the ‘Any Room’ category.

The two awards were accepted in front of 500 industry insiders from across the country by New Horizon Homes president Jeff Paikin and vice president Joe Giacomodonato. The Green Home Award was won for a custom project the company worked on in Grimsby, while the second award was for a basement renovation completed in Burlington.

Current parent, Conni Robinson (son Jacob) of New Horizon Homes reported to the Hamilton Spectator recently in their Living Green section, “It was a huge learning experience; it's the first house we've built with this many green elements.”

“It is truly monumental that a local home building company has been recognized with these two national awards in particular,” said Mr. Spicer. “HHHBA member builders are nothing if not savvy and this is a fantastic example of how they have adapted quickly to market conditions and consumer demand.”

Congratulations to New Horizon Homes and the Smith family for their commitment to green living for future generations.
