Spring Is in the Air!

As we approach the Mid-Term Break, I am reminded that this is a very holy time of the year for a number of the world’s great religions. As well, Spring generally is a time of rebirth and renewal. After a long and cold winter marked by gloomy reports on the state of the world economy, the arrival of Spring brings nature back to life, providing us with a renewed sense of hope and optimism.  In Spring, everything seems to start anew.

The Spring term is particularly active and dynamic for HSC students as they throw themselves into a wide range of co-curricular activities, complete a plethora of major assignments, write Advanced Placement and final examinations, and plan for the year ahead. For our grade 12 students, key decisions will be made as to which university offers they will accept and which programs they will pursue.  To date, our graduating class members have received literally hundred of offers of places, scholarships and awards from a wide range of Ontario and Canadian universities, as well as from American universities including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Purdue, Illinois, Washington and Davis.

Indeed, the arrival of Spring reminds us that we have much to be thankful for here at HSC.  Admissions are strong for next year, and I am pleased to report that with the support of our parent community we managed to complete the re-enrolment process efficiently and effectively, and more students have been re-enrolled for next year than in previous years. Our Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign is enjoying unprecedented levels of participation, and the silent phase of the Transformation HSC Capital Campaign continues to encounter great success, thereby bringing ever closer the date when the shovel will go into the ground for our new Senior School and College-wide Athletic Complex.

In closing, I wish all of our students and their families, as well as our faculty, staff and other members of the HSC community, a wonderful long weekend.  Let’s hope for good weather as Spring continues its process of renewing our world.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Tom Matthews
Headmaster

Attention HSC Families – We still need 13 beds!

2 students (or more) from schools across Canada
4 nights (Apr 15, 16, 17, 19)
1 Family (yours)
The opportunity to help AND make new friends...priceless

Do you have the power to help HSC host the 2009 CAIS Student Leadership Conference?  We need HSC families that can take in students from across Canada for 4 nights, April 15- April 19, 2009. We need you to commit to providing a place to sleep (Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat.) and breakfasts on Thurs., Fri., Sat. and Sun.  We would also need you to arrange transportation for your billet students to get to HSC. If your regular HSC bus is not full, the billeted students may use the bus coming in the morning. We will help by offering bulk bus service similar to dances at night and on Saturday morning.  The conference will end at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 11:00 p.m. on Saturday.  All billet students will get on buses to drop off locations near you, and you would need to pick them up from there.  This is a great opportunity to make new friends from somewhere else in Canada. These are future student leaders selected by their schools to attend this amazing conference and we need YOU to help make the experience even more amazing.  Please contact:

Hoda Kayal at 905 639 6085, hoda.kayal@hsc.on.ca OR Carol Morrison at 905-304-5908, cmorrison42@cogeco.ca.

Sign up ASAP.  Let them know how many students you can take in and whether you would like boys or girls.  The conference is only 1 week away and we still need to fill 13 beds.  Do you have the power to make a difference?  All HSC families are welcome, not just those with Senior School students!

HSC students demonstrate ingenuity and creativity at regional science fair

The hard work paid off in a big way for participants of the 49th Annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair where 278 student exhibitors competed for cash, prizes and scholarships amounting to more than $120,000. The fair, hosted this year by Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology, came to a close on March 28, 2009 after three days of monumental effort by participants, organizers, judges and volunteers.

Top honours went to Rachael Smith, a Grade 8 student at Hillfield Strathallan College whose project “Wii r XBOX surgeons … P/S u can be 2” won the Dofasco Pinnacle Best-in-Fair Award. Third place Best-in-Fair went to Hillfield Strathallan College’s Romita Sur who was recognized for her research on cancer treatment.  In addition, the College was awarded The Herb Gildea Award for top high school.

Romita won an all-expense paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (IISEF) in Reno, Nevada, May 10-16, 2009, where she will compete against 1500 high school students from 40 countries. Rachael Smith, Hannah Morris-Patterson and  Madison Dobrovolskis will be heading west to the Canada-wide Science Fair in Winnipeg May 9-17, 2009. READ MORE

Catch the buzz and BEE prepared for a sweet Fair Day

Calling All Worker Bees
If there was ever a day for parents to help out and have fun, it’s Fair Day. We need you! Parent Volunteers are needed to help with Games, the BBQ, Book Sale, Kids’ Crafts and Penny Sale. Volunteers are also needed for set-up and clean-up (A job that must BEE done, and we’ll love you for it!).

If you are interested in volunteering or for more information, please contact Diane Selby at 905-854-0522 or by e-mail at selbydi@hsc.on.ca or click here to download the volunteer form.

It’s time for the busy bees to start collecting for Penny Sale
Penny Sale is a success BEEcause of the wonderful new items that parents donate. If you are not sure what to purchase, then think like a child when you enter a store! The fairy costume that an adult might consider frivolous is something that your inner child knows you would love…same goes for stuffed animals, water canons, and sparkly purses. Thinking like a teenager works too. They love sports paraphernalia, grooming items, and DVDs.

This year we are opening the Penny Sale to adult items, and would welcome donations that children might give as gifts to a parent, grandparent, or teacher.

All Penny Sale donations are eligible for a charitable donation receipt. Attach your original receipt to the Donation Form, available in an electronic copy at www.hsc.on.cs/parentsassocaition/fairday. Please deliver the completed form to the Main Office, marked Fair Day.
For additional information contact Karen Price 905-383-1333 or k.price@sympatico.ca or Debbie Demers at 905-332-9007 or ddemers5@cogeco.ca.

Junior
School to lead effort for Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, 2009

As Earth Day approaches we want to encourage our students to act responsibly as global citizens. This year the Nature Conservancy of Canada has been chosen as the organization that the College will support.  Heading the effort throughout the College, the Junior School will be “Howling for Habitats” – specifically trying to aid and support the protection and maintenance of Grey Wolf Habitats.

Students will be encouraged to bring in donations during the week of April 20-24. As the students contribute, they will add to the interactive display in the Junior School. The bulletin board will grow with the generosity of our students and families.

We look forward to everyone’s support in making this a successful campaign. Thank you and Happy Earth Day to all!

Dominican Republic Service Trip, 2009

On March 12, 2009, seven service-minded students from HSC left for a 336-hour adventure in the Dominican Republic with Power Trips Inc.  Brianna Schatz, Caroline McKenna, Claire Pilon-Robertson, Deborah Liendo-Kaufman, Megan Husband, Spencer Meens, Yiyong Lok along with Mrs. Kirkpatrick (AKA Kirky) were the HSC pod who put aside fears of spiders, street dogs, peeing baby goats, mosquito bites and cold showers to fulfill the purpose of this 2-week service trip.

“We went to help empower communities through school and community development and improvement”, said Mrs. Kirkpatrick. Working closely with local teachers, directors, parent associations, and community members, the service team successfully beautified, expanded, improved and made safer and more sanitary four individual primary/elementary multi-grade schools around the city of Moca, Dominican Republic. Me to We Vow of Silence

Beginning on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. and for the next 24 hours, forty students at HSC participated in ‘The Vow of Silence’ campaign.  The purpose of this annual world-wide campaign is to raise awareness for all of the voiceless people, not only in third world countries, but around the world.

The event raised approximately $2,500 in support of Free the Children’s development programs, providing schools, alternative income projects, health care and clean water and sanitation systems in the world’s poorest communities.

“It was a great first-hand experience to see how some people live on a daily basis. It was hard not to have the ability to communicate with our peers; we can’t imagine what it would be like to live a life time like that”, said Brooke Harrison. Thanks to everyone who showed their support.

Good News about COWS

HSC is now home to a virtual farm of COWS (computers laptops on wheels). The $148,084 that the Parents’ Association raised in 2007-2008 had increased buying power when Brenda Zwolak and Brad D'Hondt examined the range of purchases that the school needed to make. They were able to buy 5.5 COWS (5 cows and a calf) which added 110 laptops to the existing herd. The remaining funds purchased 4 new SMARTboard systems and 6 new SMARTboards.

Bonnie Lendrum, past president noted that “Our goal with last year’s fundraising was to purchase the technology that would help build 21st century skills.  Thanks to the wonderful partnerships within the school and with our suppliers, we exceeded our expectations!”

Of the $148,084, raised by the Parents’ Association in 2007-2008, $14, 809 was directed to the Endowment Fund and $133, 275 was directed to technology purchases. Most schools offer ing the level of technology that HSC provides charge extra technology fees.  HSC parents have avoided such a levy through successful fundraising.
