2009 CAIS Student Leadership Conference a resounding success!

For four amazing days, 128 students and 29 faculty advisors from all across Canada came to HSC to attend the 2009 CAIS Student Leadership Conference.  A dedicated group of grade twelve students spent the previous eight months planning and then running the student-led conference, which takes place every year at one of the participating CAIS schools.

This year’s conference theme was “The Power of One” and its goal was to highlight the impact that one person can have on the world around them.  The student delegates, from seven different Canadian provinces, participated in workshops on Communication, Strengths and Weaknesses in Leadership, Interpretive Dance, and a very special workshop run by the Canadian Olympic Committee.

All of these workshops were developed and run by students from the planning committee and were just one of the many opportunities that these students had to experience and demonstrate their leadership skills. “The students created a special atmosphere during the conference - one that combined organization with flexibility, positive energy with maturity, and genuine inclusiveness with the ‘Power of One’. In my 20 years of teaching, the 2009 CAIS Leadership Conference is one of the most dynamic student-led events that I have ever encountered”, said Bob Neibert, Head of the Senior School. READ MORE

It’s time for the busy bees to start collecting for Penny Sale
Penny Sale is a success BEEcause of the wonderful new items that parents donate. If you are not sure what to purchase, then think like a child when you enter a store! The fairy costume that an adult might consider frivolous is something that your inner child knows you would love…same goes for stuffed animals, water canons, and sparkly purses. Thinking like a teenager works too. They love sports paraphernalia, grooming items, and DVDs. This year we are opening the Penny Sale to adult items, and would welcome donations that children might give as gifts to a parent, grandparent, or teacher.

All Penny Sale donations are eligible for a charitable donation receipt. Attach your original receipt to the Donation Form, available in an electronic copy at www.hsc.on.cs/fairday. Please deliver the completed form to the Main Office, marked Fair Day.

Environmental Responsibility:  A River Runs Through It

For a fleeting moment this spring, a small piece of the Niagara Escarpment will sprout several new rivers. The miniature “rivers” are part of a hands-on lesson about the work of water in the environment. Students in Montessori  6 and 7 begin to learn about river ecology in the classroom but it is on this wooded escarpment hillside that the lesson blossoms with experiential learning. Immersed in the tools of nature, the children use their knowledge and their creativity for a half-day of river-building.

“So much of learning at this age is about creating an impression,” explains Danielle Hourigan, Assistant Head of Montessori School.  “An activity like this creates a strong impression of the power of water. They’ll remember it and when they see places like the Niagara gorge they’ll really understand just how that landscape developed.” READ MORE

HSC Grade 10 students plant trees to celebrate Earth Day

On Friday, April 17, 2009 HSC started to celebrate Earth Day a little earlier than usual when ninety-eight eager Grade 10 students headed off campus to participate in a tree- planting event held by the City of Hamilton. Under bright and sunny skies, students and teachers convened with city employees at the border of the Chedoke Golf and Country Club and the Dundurn Street Radial Trail. Once the employees provided us with some safety instructions the tree-planting began in earnest.  The student were enthusiastic and got down to business planting a variety of oaks, sassafrass, mulberry, hazel, hop, birch, choke cheery, and many more trees.  The event was a huge success!  By the end of the day, the students had planted 500 trees along the Radial Trail enhancing the scenery of the trail and giving back to the environment.  The students felt a sense of pride for a job well done and the teachers marveled at their energy and commitment during the day’s activities.
