An Open Invitation to Parents - Brain Learning and Applications Institute -
June 25 and 26, 2009
We all know that students gain when parents and the school work in close partnership. With this in mind we are pleased to offer places for this 2-day institute to interested parents. Openings are available for either the full 2 day event ($400.00 registration) or one day only ($200.00). We are working in conjunction with Bob Greenleaf of www.greenleaflearning.com and the speaker line-up from the USA and Canada is excellent. Dr. Matthews, Ms. de Freitas and Ms. Brenda Zwolak attended the sessions in the USA last year and were very impressed with the quality of the experience. We are excited to host as the Canadian venue. Research in neuroscience over the last 10 years has critical implications for teaching and learning and the new insights may cause us to rethink some of our current assumptions.
For complete conference details and to register please, go to www.hsc.on.ca/BLAI and be sure to “tell a friend”. Please direct questions to Jennifer Vergos at 905 -389 -1367, ext. 118 or by e-mail vergosje@hsc.on.ca

Please support Tim Hortons Camp Day!

A number of our current and former parents are local Tim Hortons franchise owners, and we would like to show our support of their initiatives to support the Tim Hortons Children's Foundation. Every penny from coffee sales across Canada during the 24-hour period will be donated to the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation. This year close to 14,000 children will have the opportunity to attend one of the six Foundation camps at no cost to them or their families, thanks to the support from communities across Canada and the United States. Last year’s event raised over $9 million!
Please visit your local “Timmies” on Wednesday, June 3rd and help other children have the wonderful summer experience that we would all wish for our own children.

The Time Just Flew By!

Alison Schure was secretly bidding on the HSC-bay Online Auction’s, “Spend a Morning On-Air with Matt & Sunni at K-Lite FM” for her father Marty Schure. She waited until the last few seconds before the auction closed, placed her final bid and held her breath until she received the email indicating she was the successful bidder!
Alison phoned her father to tell him the good news and he was thrilled!
Coincidentally, Marty already had a bit of a connection with both Sunni Genesco and Matt Hayes. Marty’s wife and Sunni are friends and, as Marty is a member of the Ancaster AM Rotary Club, Matt and Marty have worked together through various Rotary functions.
Marty was on-air with Matt and Sunni on Wednesday, April 29 and he describes the experience as “a hoot.” Marty arrived at the station at 7 am and said that the next 3 hours literally flew by. He did have an opportunity to mention HSC, very briefly, as his granddaughter, Rian Schure-Duffy attends Junior School. Marty commented on how happy and engaged the students are at HSC and his willingness to get “more involved” in a volunteer role.
The conversation and laughter continued as Marty, Matt and Sunni all had breakfast together at The Egg & I Restaurant following the show. Feeling like three old friends, Marty said that the on-air show could have lasted another 2 hours, and the time still would have flown by.
Marty has always been an avid AM radio listener, but now he says, K-Lite FM has been programmed into his car radio. Marty sang the praises of the HSC-bay Online Auction and thought that it was a tremendous way to raise funds for HSC and the best part of it was, he didn’t have to put on a tuxedo!

Help Wanted!
Billet Host Families needed for our U13 Boys’ Basketball Tournament
February 3, 4, 5 & 6, 2010
Next February, Hillfield Strathallan College will have the privilege of hosting the 2010 Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) U13 Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Our goal is to have the HSC community embrace this event and make it a special experience for our guests, one they will always remember.
The College will be hosting 15 other teams from schools across Canada from Wednesday, February 3rd to Saturday, February 6th, inclusive. Each team will consist of a maximum of 12 players. Each visiting team will need to be billeted in HSC homes (6 homes hosting at least 2 boys) for the duration of their visit.
Our U13 team was fortunate to win the tournament this past year, held in Calgary, and the boys really enjoyed the billeting experience.
Would you be interested in billeting some students in your home for the three nights (Wednesday to Friday)? Click here for more information.

HSC Tribute Program - Honour Your Favourite Teacher or Mentor
The HSC Tribute Program allows you to provide a lasting tribute in celebration of an event, an accomplishment, a loved one who is no longer with us or your favourite teacher and mentor. Your gift will provide encouragement to the families of those who have experienced a loss and appreciation to those whom you honour.
“It’s so easy to participate in this program. A quick note to the Advancement Office to initiate my tribute gift, and I was able to very effectively thank those members of faculty who play such an important role in the lives of our children. I highly recommend it as a way of both saying thank you and supporting the College.”
~ Dr. Jennifer Everson,
Chair – Board of Governors and Current Parent
The person you designate will receive a card announcing your special gift in their honour. If your gift is in memory of a friend or loved one, a card will be sent to the family. All gift amounts are confidential and you will receive a tax receipt for your records.
A donation through the Tribute Program allows you to honour that special person while at the same time helping the entire community of HSC. And all tribute gifts count towards our Annual Giving Campaign goal of obtaining 500 donors this year.
Click here to download an HSC Tribute Program card or contact Kim Shippey, Advancement Manager 905-389-1367 ext. 107 or email kim.shippey@hsc.on.ca for more information.
