New Prefects Installed and Ready for the Challenge of Leadership

On Friday, September 18, 2009 Senior School students participated in the College’s annual Prefect Installation Chapel Service. Fourteen Grade 12 students received their Prefect pins and ties in a service that included an energetic and highly entertaining performance from the Senior School Jazz Ensemble directed by Mr. Allan Gaumond. In his reading, Mr. Neibert emphasized the importance of community, while Dr. Matthews’s address focused on character and the powerful connection between leadership and service.
Participating in the installation of the College Prefects was Mr. Ron Bremner ’67, the recipient of this year’s Alumni of Distinction Award. While he was a student at HSC, Mr. Bremner certainly played an important leadership role, serving as Head Prefect or Head Boy, as well as captain of the football and hockey teams.
For most of his professional life, Mr. Bremner has been immersed in the world of communications, first with CFRB in Toronto, and later in Vancouver with CKNW/CFMI and BCTV. More recently, he served as President of the Calgary Flames and of the Saddledome. He currently owns and operates Gold Medal Consulting which specializes in leadership training, executive coaching, management consulting and motivational speaking.
Following the Prefect Installation Chapel Service, Mr. Bremner was recognized in the Artsplex as the recipient of this year’s Alumni of Distinction Award. He received a certificate, and in his honour, a chair will be placed in Lawson Hall. As well, the Ron Bremner Scholarship will be given to a graduating student in June of 2010.
In his address to Senior School students and a number of special guests, including former teachers Mr. Ted Helwig, Mr. Bob Neilson and Mr. Geoffrey Steel, Mr. Bremner spoke fondly of his time at the College and highlighted the positive impact that it had on his later life. He also elaborated on the importance of people skills, determination and tenacity. In telling the story of Billy Sherring, a Hamilton man who won a gold medal at the 1906 Olympic Games, he reinforced this message in an address that was warmly received by everyone in attendance.
