HSC community extends spirit of giving through the month of December

In addition to the various activities reported in December’s Parent E-News:

HSC is very pleased to announce that $705.34 was collected for The United Way at Carol Service. Combined with $500.00 donated by HSC in lieu of Christmas cards the total amount donated to The United Way was $1205.34.

The Middle School students presented a $500.00 cheque to Neighbour to Neighbour just before Christmas. The money was raised at the Grade 7/8 Christmas dance.

With your help, the Junior School was able to raise enough money to send Tim Horton’s gift cards to over 120 servicemen and women in Afghanistan along with Holiday Greetings.

Their 2009 Holiday Toy Drive was one of the most successful Junior School toy drives in recent years.  Thank you for helping to make Christmas a little brighter for the families who visit our local Neighbour to Neighbour Centre.

Thanks to all who donated to these worthwhile causes.

Committee seeks to define wellness at HSC

In keeping with one of the key strategic priorities identified in our current Strategic Plan, a committee has been formed to articulate a definition of wellness in our school community, and to promote and nurture wellness at HSC.  In total there are six committees including the Wellness Committee, the Professional Development Committee, the Green School Steering Committee, the IT Integration Committee, the Student-Centred Learning Committee and the Student Leadership Committee established to help fulfill “Making A World of Difference” the College’s current Strategic Plan for 2008-2014. You can view the plan in its entirety at www.hsc.on.ca.

Priority B of the Plan states: “We will ensure that all of our students are able to develop and ultimately fulfill their leadership potential.”  As part of the implementation strategy for this student-centred goal the Board of Governors approved that a College-wide instructional program be initiated to develop personal and school wellness; it is this strategy that the newly-formed committee will address.

The committee includes a cross-section of Faculty, Staff and Current Parents, and will be co-Chaired by Amaris Langton and Sarah Walker:

Adam Carswell (Head of Junior School)           Maria Di Febo (Montessori)
Sage Kavander (Health Services RN)               Sarah Walker (Junior School)
Gina Ranger (Hurst Place)                                Laur-Ann Camus (Middle School)
Eleonor Kerr (Human Resources)                     Amaris Langton (Senior School)
Dr. Ally Prebtani (Current Parent)                     Dr. Demetrios Sahlas (Current Parent)

Following their initial meeting in December 2009 the committee has begun to explore how best to educate, promote and nurture wellness at HSC, with a priority on delivery to our student body.  In particular they will articulate definitions encompassing psychological, relational, social and physical wellness, as well as an inventory of cross-College information on what is already in place in this regard.    The committee will consult with Faculty and Students to identify the top wellness priorities to address, and will communicate back to our wider community on their progress over the coming months.

If you have questions or input, please feel free to contact Mr. Adam Carswell, Head of Junior School at 905-389-1367 ext. 172 or adam.carswell@hsc.on.ca.

Olympic Torch Relay visits Greater Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara Area

The Olympic Torch Relay passed through the greater Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara area December 19 and December 20 - days 51 and 52 of its 106-day journey across Canada.  In total the Olympic Flame will travel 45,000 kilometres over 106 days and visit every Province and Territory in Canada. The flame will be carried by some 12,000 torchbearers leading to the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, signaling the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games on February 12, 2010.

Dr. Ron Foxcroft, Vice-Chair of the HSC Board of Governors, Chair of the Transformation HSC campaign and current parent, carried the Olympic torch on the final 300 metres anchor leg of the relay to the ceremony at Dundurn Castle in Hamilton on December 19 2009. On December 21st Dr. Foxcroft graciously shared his Olympic experience with other Hamiltonians in support of CHML’s Tree of Hope.  For a $5 donation to the Tree of Hope (matched by Arcelor Mittal Dofasco), members of the community had their picture taken with Ron and the Olympic torch. Venezuela Expedition Re-Launch! Now Departing July, 2011

Parents and students are welcome to come to a presentation by World Challenge Expeditions on January 26, 2010  at 7:00 p.m. in the Senior Library for the re-launching of the proposed Venezuela Expedition. This expedition is open to any student aged 14 by June 30, 2011.

The expedition includes a journey into the Lost World  on the plateau mountain of Mt. Roraima. This plateau was recently thought (and still is by the locals) to house many unique species mammalia, including dinosaurs. Also included is a flight and possible hike into the world’s highest waterfall(and possibly swimming under) Angel Falls. Besides the  beauty and challenge of the rainforests and mountains, students will be provided with the opportunity to take part  in some cultural immersion, while providing valuable community service to a local group (e.g. working in a school, building projects, etc.). Finally, the students will end their journey with some rest and relaxation, be it on a beach, or shopping  in the local markets. READ MORE

6th Annual Hillfield Strathallan College Grades 8-9 Science Fair

Science fairs provide a unique learning opportunity for students, teachers, and members of the community to explore science and to increase public awareness of  science and the world in which we live. Though science fairs are generally competitive, they also provide the opportunity for students to display their creative scientific activity beyond the classroom and in the world. This year’s science fair will be held in Lawson Hall from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010.  Public viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

The Key Points:

  • Symptoms to be concerned about: cough AND fever, as well as the possibility of sore throat, aches/pains and weakness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may be evident, especially in those under five years of age.
  • Should a student present with these symptoms while at school they should be seen immediately by the school nurse. Anyone with a cough AND fever will be kept in isolation and sent home.
  • If a student presents with a cough AND fever while at home, or has a confirmed case of H1N1 they are not to return to school until they have been fever-free (without the use of medications) for at least 24 hours. Those with a cough can return to school so long as the fever is gone and they feel generally well. However, we ask that those who have been away due to H1N1 and/or influenza-like illness see a school nurse upon return.
  • The school community is encouraged to follow proper “cough etiquette”, as well as proper hand hygiene.

Please look for future HSC communications with more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.
