HSC’s Senior School Social Action Committee leaps into action!

The Social Action Committee was out in full force at Wellwood’s annual 1K/5K/10K run to act as marshals along the course. The event was in support of Colorectal Cancer, and held at McMaster University on October 18, 2009.

This year the Social Action Committee (SAC) is working in partnership with Wellwood, a Hamilton-based charity, founded by HSC parents and students. Wellwood’s second community-based site is in the final stages of construction on the grounds of Chedoke Hospital, and is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010. The committee will be fundraising to furnish as many rooms as possible, starting with the playroom, in the new centre. The committee will also be volunteering to help decorate and move into the new centre, once completed.

SAC’s first fundraiser, a morning breakfast café, will be held in the Boardroom in mid-November. Keep an eye out for more details and come, eat and support a great cause!

Wellwood is a local charity dedicated to helping people to live well with cancer. All of the centre’s supportive programs are free of charge. For more information, visit www.wellwood.on.ca.

Neighbour to Neighbour Food Drive

On Thursday, October 8, 2009 the HSC community participated in a Thanksgiving Food Drive in support of  Neighbour to Neighbour. Students, faculty, and staff were encouraged to dress down in exchange for a donation of non-perishable goods.

HSC amassed 5,582 lbs of food goods together with $400.00 in cash. HSC’s efforts were part of a larger Hamilton community-based effort to support the food bank. About ten days prior to Thanksgiving, many of the shelves sat bare. The Athens Street food bank had run out of several items, including pasta, canned vegetables and cereal, and many food bank users were leaving with less than they would normally be entitled to. “We were very desperate,” said Sara Collyer, Operations Manager at Neighbour to Neighbour Centre.

Demand for food bank services continues to grow. Ms. Collyer noted about 1,300 Hamilton Mountain and Ancaster families used the food bank in September – a jump of about 23 per cent from the same month last year.

October, November and December are traditionally the busiest months for the food bank. In addition to regular food bank services, officials at Neighbour to Neighbour are gearing up for their annual Christmas hamper program.

Troops Love Coffee

Our Canadian soldiers have a difficult mission in Afghanistan. For many of them it is their second or third tour of duty. Last December, the students of the Junior School decided to give our soldiers some ‘TLC’. Each student in the Junior School created a Christmas card for a soldier stationed in Afghanistan. As part of this initiative donations were collected to purchase Tim Horton’s certificates which were included in each specially created greeting card.

The College recently received a lovely thank you letter from Captain Raymond Corby, serving with “71 Bravo” of the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team of The Royal Canadian Regiment. Captain Corby writes, “My team of soldiers and I received your Christmas cards and the Tim Horton’s gift certificates this past March in Afghanistan. Because of the distance the package travelled and the remote location where my soldiers and I were based, it was several months after Christmas that we received the envelope from your school. We were very excited to receive the cards.”

Though the soldiers did not have immediate access to the Tim Horton’s in Kandahar, a few weeks after receiving the gift certificates they departed Afghanistan. Prior to their departure the soldiers returned to the Kandahar Airbase and were able to visit the Tim Horton’s at least three times a day!

Captain Corby added, “I led a small team of soldiers who train and work with the Afghan National Army, a very important institution to build in such a chaotic country. I must tell you that my soldiers, Canadian soldiers, are impressive individuals. Thank you so much for your support of our Canadian Forces. Your awareness of our mission demonstrates your commitment to being informed citizens.”

The Junior School plans to undertake this important initiative again during the month of December. For more information, please contact Karen Morris at karen.morris@hsc.on.ca.

Not many can boast that they have travelled in space, but Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk helped Quartetto Gelato get there!  During his NASA flight aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 1997 he listened to only one CD – Quartetto Gelato.

Celebrating its 22nd season, the Crescendo Concert Series, is pleased to present the internationally awarding winning entertainers, Quartetto Gelato on Friday, October 30th at 8:00 pm in the HSC Artsplex.  Tina Grande, Proprietor of La Cantina Ristorante Italiano and Evening Partner for this concert remarked, “The positive impact HSC has made in the lives of our children has been overwhelming; making a decision to support the Arts in the HSC Community was a heartfelt, natural decision.  The Arts are an integral part of our family's life, as it is for our school community. We are so very proud to partner with the Crescendo Concert Series.”

For over a decade, Quartetto Gelato has enchanted audiences and critics worldwide.  This ensemble mesmerizes its audiences with its multi-instrument mastery, but also offers the bonus of a brilliant operatic tenor in violinist and founding member, Peter De Sotto.

Innisbrook Fundraiser: $10,000 raised by HSC families!

Mission accomplished! The final sales have been tallied and the goal of raising $10,000 has been achieved!  This initiative enjoyed tremendous growth this year. Led by Rhoda Bryans and Deborah Altmann of the HSC Parents’ Association, the funds raised almost doubled from $5,621 in the prior year. Over 175 orders were received; up from 91 in 2008.

“I believe this is a project that can only go from “strength to strength”. Everyone has an opportunity to contribute even if it is to buy just one box of chocolates or a roll of wrapping paper.  It is a win/win initiative as the HSC community receives value for their money, and the profits coming back to the school go to bettering the learning environment for all our children” says Rhoda Bryans.

The HSC Parents’ Association would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of this program!

The U16 Girls’ Basketball team had a successful weekend at the Rockway Invitational Under 16 Basketball Tournament in Kitchener. HSC placed first winning the gold medal in the championship game against Owen Sound High School.

Teamwork, endurance, drive, and patience brought home the gold. The girls not only impressed their coaches on the court, but off the court as well. The girls have nicknamed their team "The Family". The team members are: Kate Bauer, Demetra Bednar, Mercedes Bomberry, Brooke Harrison, Amy Latimer, Olivia Lovrics, Jillan McKenna, Alexander Rocca, Eilish Scallan, Lauren Sehdey, Maja Shannon, Andrea Simonits and Lindsay Taylor.

The merger of two venerable Canadian educational associations has created a new national voice in independent education

Last week, at the Annual Conference of the Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), a watershed decision was made that will have a positive impact on independent schools in Canada for many decades to come.

In a nutshell, CAIS member schools voted overwhelmingly to disband CAIS and to amalgamate with CESI in order to create a new national organization dedicated to the promotion and improvement of independent schools nationwide. One of the Co-Chairs of the new organization’s Board of Directors is former HSC Board Chair and Current Parent, Mr. Jeff Paikin ’80.

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

The Key Points:

  • Please pay attention to future HSC communications for more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.
  • Symptoms to be concerned about: Cough AND fever, as well as possible, sore throat, aches/pains and weakness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may be present, especially in those under five years of age.
  • Should a student present with these symptoms, while at school, they should be seen immediately by the school nurse. Anyone with a cough AND fever will be kept in isolation and sent home.
  • If a students presents with a cough AND fever while at home, they are not to return for school until they have been fever-free (without the use of medications) for at least 24 hours. Those with a cough can return to school, so long as the fever is gone and they generally feel well.
  • Those with confirmed H1N1 will require a letter from their doctor allowing them to return to school.
  • The school community is encouraged to follow proper “cough etiquette”, as well as, proper hand hygiene.
  • Please pay attention to future HSC communications for more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.
