HSC Remembers

Wednesday’s Remembrance Day Service brought together students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the College in a moving ceremony honouring Canada’s war dead, including the College’s 47 Old Boys who died in the two world wars, our veterans and soldiers actively serving around the world.
The service was punctuated by a number of wonderful musical performances from the Senior School Choir and Band. As he has done for six decades, Mr. Geoffrey Steel read aloud the names of the Fallen.
Participating in the Wreath Laying Ceremony were Mr. Leslie William Kitson, Canadian Air Force Veteran, Mrs. Margaret Morison ’47, Mr. Ron Bremner ’67, Head Girl, Mina Kazemi and Head Boy, Haydon Lutz. Readings and Presentation of the Wreaths were offered by Board Chair, Dr. Jennifer Everson and Alumni Association President, Liane Ormond ’78, as well as current HSC students Hannah Wood and Ryan Jackson.
In his address, Dr. Matthews highlighted the role played by the College’s alumni in the two world wars, and he concluded that we have a lesson to learn from the Fallen. Just as they answered the call of King and country, we also have a responsibility to make the most of our talents and to do whatever we can to help make the world a better place.

The 21st century choice in E-Learning - A unique model for creating the virtual classroom
It is standard of practice to consider 21st century learning skills in any discussion about education these days. E-Learning is an essential consideration in this dialogue, and HSC is building the vision of having all of our Senior students complete one e-learning course over their four-year high school experience. We believe that skill development in e-learning is a basic requirement for post-secondary preparation and beyond.
HSC is a founding member of the CIS E-Learning consortium, (www.ciselc.com) and a key player in the initial development of the vision for e-learning, There are 16 independent member schools offering 13 courses in 2009-10 and another 12 in 2010-11. HSC offers the Grade 12 data management course this year and will offer Grade 11 communications technology and economics courses next year. In the first year of delivery, over 130 students have enrolled in the ELC courses. The new listing of courses will be included in the Senior School course calendar which is distributed in January and will be posted on the HSC website in the Senior School section.
What distinguishes the CIS E-Learning courses from those offered by other online course providers?
- Quality of teachers
- ELC teachers must complete an additional qualification university course for E-Learning so that the quality in course design and delivery are of high standards
- Rigour of the course
- ELC courses undergo a quality control process and are as rigourous as face to face courses provided at HSC
- Full year pacing
- ELC courses are offered as full year courses and are not self-paced
- Learning as a social process
- ELC courses include significant levels of collaboration, group work, peer interactivity, teacher feedback
- Technology applications
- ELC courses enable students to develop skills with new tools that they can apply to other courses; e.g. WIMBA, pronto, Google docs.

HSC Best Buddies 2009 - 2010
On November 6, 2009 we had our annual Meet and Greet at Community Living Hamilton. At the Meet and Greet, the new members to the program met their Buddies and had the ultimate ‘Girls’ Night In’.
We had pizza, painted nails, watched a movie, designed friendship bracelets for each other and most importantly, made new friends. Overall it was a very memorable night! It is safe to say that it is going to be another great year with Best Buddies HSC!
Best Buddies is a national charitable organization that pairs up high school and university students with young adults with an intellectual delay. The Student Buddies get together with their individual Buddies at least twice a month and communicate with them via e-mail or phone once a week.

Our Leaders of Tomorrow
Developing our students’ leadership skills and ensuring that they have the best resources and opportunities to achieve their dreams and be the leaders of tomorrow is the focus of the 2009-2010 Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign, Learning to Lead.
Last year’s Excelsior campaign was given a challenge to increase donor participation. Working together, we achieved that goal and saw an increase in participation rates in all areas. Our Learning to Lead campaign requires the same shared commitment to ensure that our students are prepared for the world outside the gates of HSC and are able to achieve their goals.
Mobile computer labs, musical instruments, outdoor and athletic equipment as well as integrating technology into our classrooms are our greatest needs and essential to enriching our students’ environment. At HSC, 100% of your donations to Excelsior flow directly to the benefit of our students across all four schools.
Please click here to support the Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign today! Each and every gift, no matter its size, makes a difference. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Shippey, Advancement Manager at 905-389-1367, ext. 107 or e-mail kim.shippey@hsc.on.ca.

Nihongo Art Contest 2009
The Nihongo Art Contest was founded in 2004 by a former Japanese teacher at Hillfield Strathallan College, Yukie Koutsaroff Uchida Mrs. Uchida invented a unique and inspiring method of teaching: she asked students to draw pictures that incorporated Japanese characters in order to embody a word’s meaning in the drawing itself.
Every year, our Japanese students participate in this contest and received many awards. In Ontario, many students are learning the Japanese language, inspired by its culture, heritage, and language interest. “We hope this Nihongo Art serves as a good motivation in students’ Japanese learning experience”, said Mrs. Uchida.
In Japanese there is a saying “Suki koso monono jozunare” which means what you like the most is what you do best. Please feel free to visit the exhibition and enjoy Nihongo Art, admission is free.
Exhibition: November 24 to December 12, 2009

Middle School Soccer Report
Soccer is the largest of our fall programs with five teams competing at the Middle School level. Overall, soccer remains very strong with the U-12 Girls winning the CISAA Championship, and the U-11 and U-12 Boys playing well in their Championship finals.
The U-13 team played a strong game in their playoff and the U-14 Boys lost to a very strong St. Michael’s team in the semi-final game. Our U-13 CAIS team played well at the National Tournament but unfortunately did not qualify for the final four placing.

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness
The Key Points:
- Symptoms to be concerned about: cough AND fever, as well as the possibility of sore throat, aches/pains and weakness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may be evident, especially in those under five years of age.
- Should a student present with these symptoms while at school they should be seen immediately by the school nurse. Anyone with a cough AND fever will be kept in isolation and sent home.
- If a student presents with a cough AND fever while at home, or has a confirmed case of H1N1 they are not to return to school until they have been fever-free (without the use of medications) for at least 24 hours. Those with a cough can return to school so long as the fever is gone and they feel generally well. However, we ask that those who have been away due to H1N1 and/or influenza-like illness see a school nurse upon return.
- The school community is encouraged to follow proper “cough etiquette”, as well as proper hand hygiene.
Please look for future HSC communications with more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.
Click here for the Headmaster's latest update on H1N1.
