Middle School Students moved by Canadian Veteran Presentation

Contributed by: Liam Lloyd

On Remembrance Day, 2009, we had the honour of listening to stories from a veteran of the Dieppe Raid, Mr. Fred Engelbrecht, and author Hugh Brewster. Mr. Brewster has written quite a few books on Canadian military history, including At Vimy Ridge, On Juno Beach and his latest book, Dieppe- Canada’s Darkest Day.

The latter book illustrates the challenges faced by soldiers like Mr Engelbrecht, who witnessed first-hand the slaughter that took place on the beaches of Dieppe. When Mr. Engelbrecht spoke, it was very moving, his voice often breaking with emotion. It is not often you get to meet the people who you read about in history books.

In 32 years, it will be the 100th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Mr Engelbrecht will not be present to see this but hopefully, through authors like Mr. Brewster, his effort will not be forgotten by students in Canada.

A Global Adventure

Contributed by: Brittany Davies

On November 8 through 10, 2009, eight HSC students and two faculty members attended the 30th annual Ontario Student Leadership Conference in Niagara Falls. The theme was Leadership: A Global Adventure. During the conference the participants listened to incredible motivational speakers such as Dr. Samantha Nutt, founder of War Child, Craig Kielburger, Free the Children and inspirational speaker Ed Gerety.

There were over 2,000 ‘future leaders’ attending from across Ontario and it was quite clear that everyone was enthusiastic about leadership and “Being the Change”. It was an unforgettable weekend and the students hope to bring back what they learned to be better leaders in the HSC community.

CIS Music Festival Auditions

The results are in from the recent CIS Music Festival auditions.  The competition was very fierce, with over 1,000 students auditioning for approximately 175 positions. Ten students from HSC have been chosen to participate in the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band.  There will be additional choral students named later.  The ten successful students are:

Concert Band
Clarissa Skorupski, Clarinet
Andrew Lagrotteria, Alto sax
Haden Lee, Baritone

Symphonic Band
Tina Zhou, Flute
Rhonda Stopyn, Clarinet
Victor Niemialkowski, Bass Clarinet
Jarred Bapty, Tuba

Wind Ensemble
Megan MacCuish, Flute
Andrea Fulton, Flute
Brandan Clark, Bass Clarinet

Congratulations!

HSC student Mackenzie Read drums to a different beat!

Mackenzie Read recently had the opportunity of playing in The Ontario Provincial Honour Band. This is an ensemble comprised of talented music students from across Ontario who auditioned for this four-day intensive musical experience.

With fifty-three other students, Mackenzie was coached under the direction of Mr. Samuel R. Hazo, an amazing conductor and composer from Pennsylvania whose compositions have been performed worldwide. Mackenzie had the thrill of preparing an entire concert program of eight pieces, including several unique and beautiful compositions of Mr. Hazo’s, and a world premiere composition commissioned for The Ontario Music Educators Association.

With two days of intensive rehearsals, the ensemble performed recently at York University and at the OMEA opening ceremonies.  The commissioned piece was performed before a crowd of 1,500 music educators from across the Province. (They received a standing ovation at the conclusion of their performance!) This has been a remarkable musical experience for Mackenzie, and he did an outstanding job representing HSC.

Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign Donations at Work

At HSC, 100% of your donations to the Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign flow directly to the benefit of our students across all four schools.  A gift to the annual campaign reflects your continuing commitment to the goals and values that an HSC education represents.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the HSC community, through the success of the 2008-2009 annual campaign, we were able to purchase a rowing racing-shell for Athletics for the rowing program. HSC students Carter & Brandon Woodward are pictured competing in the City Championships at the Hamilton Harbour in May 2009.

Annual gifts make up the difference between what tuition covers and the actual cost of operating our school to such a high standard.  Our needs for the 2009-2010 annual campaign are e-learning software and web-based programming, as well as mobile computer labs and musical instruments for the Arts.

Please click here to support the Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign today!  Each and every gift, no matter its size, makes a difference.  If you have any questions, please contact Kim Shippey, Advancement Manager at 905-389-1367 ext. 107 or email kim.shippey@hsc.on.ca

Troops Love Coffee

During the week of November 23 to the 27, students in the Junior School will create holiday cards to be sent overseas.

“My team of soldiers and I received your Christmas cards and the Tim Hortons’ gift certificates this past March in Afghanistan. Because of the distance the package travelled and the remote location where my soldiers and I were based, it was several months after Christmas that we received the envelope from your school. We were very excited to receive the cards”, said Captain Raymond Corby, serving with “71 Bravo” of the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team of The Royal Canadian Regiment.

We invite those who wish to participate in this project to send in $5.00 which will be used to purchase Tim Hortons’ Gift Certificates to be included with the cards. For more information, please contact Karen Morris at karen.morris@hsc.on.ca.

“It’s so easy to participate in this program. A quick note to the Advancement Office to initiate my tribute gift, and I was able to very effectively thank those members of faculty who play such an important role in the lives of our children. I highly recommend it as a way of both saying thank you and supporting the College.”

Dr. Jennifer Everson,
Chair, Board of Governors and Current Parent

HSC Tribute Program - A Lasting Gift

As a distinctive way to celebrate the holidays, consider making a Tribute gift in the name of a special person in your life - a family member, a friend or a teacher perhaps.

The HSC Tribute Program is designed to allow you to make gifts to the College in honour of an individual or an occasion. The person you designate will receive a card announcing your special gift in his/her honour. If your gift is in memory of a friend or loved one, a card will be sent to the family. Gift amounts are never mentioned and you will receive a tax receipt for your records.

Provide a lasting tribute in celebration of an event, an accomplishment, a loved one who is no longer with us or your favourite teacher and mentor. Your gift will provide encouragement to the families of those who have experienced a loss and appreciation to those whom you honour.

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

The Key Points:

  • Symptoms to be concerned about: cough AND fever, as well as the possibility of sore throat, aches/pains and weakness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may be evident, especially in those under five years of age.
  • Should a student present with these symptoms while at school they should be seen immediately by the school nurse. Anyone with a cough AND fever will be kept in isolation and sent home.
  • If a student presents with a cough AND fever while at home, or has a confirmed case of H1N1 they are not to return to school until they have been fever-free (without the use of medications) for at least 24 hours. Those with a cough can return to school so long as the fever is gone and they feel generally well. However, we ask that those who have been away due to H1N1 and/or influenza-like illness see a school nurse upon return.
  • The school community is encouraged to follow proper “cough etiquette”, as well as proper hand hygiene.

Please look for future HSC communications with more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.

Click here for the Headmaster's latest update on H1N1.
