HSC hosts CAIS U-13 Boys’ Basketball Tournament

HSC had the great honour of hosting the 18th Annual CAIS U-13 Boys’ National Basketball tournament from February 4 to 6, 2010. Participating in this year’s tournament were 16 teams and more than 200 athletes from across Canada. “Although the participating teams represent a wide cross section of schools, we share a common philosophy and a set of values that distinguish us as members of the CAIS family of independent schools. We are committed to a broad and inclusive approach to education that embraces academics, the arts, athletics, leadership and service. Moreover, our commitment to athletics is not casual or superficial. We strongly believe that the lessons learned in the gym or on the playing field can be just as valuable as the lessons learned in the classroom,” said Headmaster Tom Matthews in his welcome at the tournament’s Opening Ceremonies. MS Read-a-thon Cheque Presentation
Contributed by: Danielle Hourigan ’82, Assistant Head, Montessori School
On Friday, January 29, 2010 Tom Lowden of the MS Society of Canada received a cheque from a group of HSC students, who participated in the college-wide “Snuggle Up and Read Day” held in November 2009. The students were reminded at that time of the challenge issued by HSC alumnus Justine (Fedak) Zurini ’89 last November to raise $20,000 for MS research. Mrs. Zurini was in attendance on the 29th to hear that HSC not only met the challenge, but surpassed it by raising $21,231.41. Thanks to all who participated, and to Mrs. Zurini for inspiring us to give to this worthy cause.

One School, One Book

The Junior School successfully launched their first annual One School, One Book initiative at the end of January. It was a very successful evening to begin their shared reading adventure. This initiative allows the whole Junior School to participate in a community reading of the classic novel “The Cricket in Times Square”. Students and parents can participate in exciting discussions both at home and school and extend their experience with the CricketQuest at: firstclass.hsc.on.ca/~watsonli.

Swing with “Linc”

In June 2005 HSC was, as many of you will recall, awarded its own Coat of Arms. The Armorial Bearings were granted to the College by the Governor General, represented by the Honourable Lincoln Alexander, who spoke in glowing terms of the importance of quality education and the value of HSC to the community.
Now there is a chance for us to come out in support of “The Honourable Linc” at a community event in his honour, on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 with proceeds going towards the United Way. The event will mark the grand opening of the Crowne Plaza Hotel & Lincoln Alexander Centre in Hamilton, and a documentary film on Lincoln Alexander will also be presented. Click here for details.

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness
The Key Points:
- Symptoms to be concerned about: cough AND fever, as well as the possibility of sore throat, aches/pains and weakness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may be evident, especially in those under five years of age.
- Should a student present with these symptoms while at school they should be seen immediately by the school nurse. Anyone with a cough AND fever will be kept in isolation and sent home.
- If a student presents with a cough AND fever while at home, or has a confirmed case of H1N1 they are not to return to school until they have been fever-free (without the use of medications) for at least 24 hours. Those with a cough can return to school so long as the fever is gone and they feel generally well. However, we ask that those who have been away due to H1N1 and/or influenza-like illness see a school nurse upon return.
- The school community is encouraged to follow proper “cough etiquette”, as well as proper hand hygiene.
Please look for future HSC communications with more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.
