For the past eight years, the Junior School has led College-wide efforts to support external environmental causes for Earth Day. Two years ago HSC’s Senior Environment Club launched a small scale project to add patches of native trees and grasses on our upper campus. This year, as an integrated local celebration of Earth Day, students College-wide will be involved in growing stock and planting a significant corridor of Carolinian savannah along the western side of the campus. This project has been supported by the Hamilton Youth Action Council of the Hamilton Community Foundation through their POET grants (Protecting Our Environment Together), and this year, for the first time, by Metro Supermarkets through their Green Apple School Program.
On February 19, 2010 Dr. Matthews was presented with a cheque in the amount of $1,000 from Metro’s Green Apple School Program. The Green Apple School Program is a Metro initiative created to encourage conservation and healthy living. Metro has invested $1 million into the program, and will provide hundreds of $1,000 grants to Primary and Secondary schools with big ideas for green projects in their communities. Green School Steering Committee Update
In keeping with the primary implementation strategies for Priority C of the College Strategic Plan, a Green School Steering Committee has been formed at HSC. The committee is focussing on the more operational strategic activities, which include the development of a College-wide Green School Plan.
In total there are six committees including the Wellness Committee, the Professional Development Committee, the Green School Steering Committee, the IT Integration Committee, the Student-Centred Learning Committee and the Student Leadership Committee established to help fulfill “Making A World of Difference” the College’s current Strategic Plan for 2008-2014. You can view the plan in its entirety at www.hsc.on.ca.
The Green School committee is comprised of representatives from each school faculty, administration and operations and is chaired by Chris Kwiecien. The committee members are:
Jody Knapp (Montessori)
Joanna Blackwell (Montessori)
Mark Mitchell (Middle)
John Hannah (Middle)
Jennifer Adams (Junior)
David Moffatt (Senior)
Jeff Whittard (Senior)
Cameron Playfair (Operations)
The College’s top priority will continue to be the intellectual, emotional, artistic and physical development of our students. Yet in a century when we will face a large number of environmental challenges, we must both model environmental stewardship and educate our students about their roles in the global and local ecosystems.
Over the past year, the committee has worked to support ‘green’ good news stories and communications and to facilitate the development of a Green School Plan. To assist with the development of HSC’s Green School Plan, the committee commissioned a third- party green audit-carbon footprint of our current operations, and has developed a complementary green school survey to assess current practice, and to collect feedback across the College constituencies.
The Green School Survey was launched on February 23 to seek input from our various constituencies about the things they would like to see emphasized by the College, as well as the current state of sustainability programs and initiatives at HSC. The committee will endeavour to provide details of the audit and survey responses once the information is evaluated. Click here to complete the survey.

Winter Transportation Reminder
Two years ago HSC introduced Bulk Route Service to allow us to keep the College open when the main routes are clear, but many neighbourhood streets are still snow-covered and slow to navigate. Although the resulting pick ups are not as convenient as our regular stops, Bulk Route Service provides a basic level of service, ensuring that our students are transported to and from the College in a safe and timely fashion. Click here to see the Bulk Route Service Schedule.

Chase the Blues Away

There were only smiles to be found at the annual Parents’ Association dinner and dance, themed ‘Chase the Blues Away,’ and which was held on Saturday, February 20 at the Burlington Golf and Country Club. Over 80 people enjoyed a stunning performance by Queen Cee and her band.
The evening opened with a martini bar, jazz trio and complimentary photograph. A delicious 3-course meal followed. Party-goers enjoyed dancing to the sounds of Rhythm Plus and a late evening buffet.
Special thanks to Committee Chair, Deborah Altmann for her leadership and to the entire committees for its hard work in creating such a wonderful evening for all to enjoy.

Olympic Fever at HSC

On February 11, the HSC community held a special day to celebrate the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics. HSC parent, Dr. Nick Bontis spoke at the event, sharing his experience of carrying the Olympic torch in downtown Hamilton on Main Street. Dr. Bontis was selected to carry the torch because of his volunteerism with local youth sports. In the afternoon, students participated in winter activities organized by the Prefects.
On February 19, Dr. Ron Foxcroft, current parent and Chair of the Transformation HSC campaign, spoke at a special chapel celebrating the Olympics. The new HSC Drum Circle, under the direction of HSC parent, Mr. Sydney Read, performed at the Olympic Chapel service last Friday. The Drum Circle has introduced participating HSC students to a new form of self-expression, and communication. Director of Arts, Dr. Burton, plans to aquire permanent drums for HSC and expand the programme in years to come. "When you travel the world, and see the importance of the drum in so many cultures, it makes sense for HSC students to be aware of the spirituality and emotionality of drumming." A huge thank you to Mr. Read for his generous donation of time and drums!
Dr. Foxcroft talked about his experiences lighting the Hamilton Olympic cauldron. Ron also spent most of his day visiting classes and the three lunch sittings so that students could hold the torch and have their picture taken with it.
The 2010 Winter Olympics will come to a close on Sunday, February 28 after 17 spectacular days of competition. Both the Canadian womens’ and mens’ hockey and curling teams are still in the hunt for medals. Go Canada Go!

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness
The Key Points:
- Symptoms to be concerned about: cough AND fever, as well as the possibility of sore throat, aches/pains and weakness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may be evident, especially in those under five years of age.
- Should a student present with these symptoms while at school they should be seen immediately by the school nurse. Anyone with a cough AND fever will be kept in isolation and sent home.
- If a student presents with a cough AND fever while at home, or has a confirmed case of H1N1 they are not to return to school until they have been fever-free (without the use of medications) for at least 24 hours. Those with a cough can return to school so long as the fever is gone and they feel generally well. However, we ask that those who have been away due to H1N1 and/or influenza-like illness see a school nurse upon return.
- The school community is encouraged to follow proper “cough etiquette”, as well as proper hand hygiene.
Please look for future HSC communications with more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.
