HSC’s Social Action Committee Supports Wellwood

Last evening the student-led Social Action Committee of HSC hosted a very special evening at Michelangelo’s Banquet Centre in support of Wellwood, a local charity that supports people and families living with cancer.

The event featured some spectacular entertainment, the highlight of which was a fashion show by up-and-coming fashion star and HSC alumnus Adrian Wu ’08.

Wellwood was chosen as the Committee’s charity this year because of its connections to the College over a number of years. It was one of HSC’s first community partners, and its founders, Dr. Greg O’Connell and his wife, Maureen O’Connor, were HSC parents; in addition, members of the HSC community past and present have benefited from Wellwood’s services.

In keeping with the College’s vision for its students to “better the world around them”, students at HSC have a long tradition of community outreach, both locally and globally. As such, students of all ages are involved in fundraising and awareness-raising activities throughout the academic year.

Wellwood is a local charity dedicated to helping cancer patients, their families, caregivers and health care providers to "live well" with cancer. The Centre offers about 25 different services, and there are more than 200 active trained volunteers involved in the design and delivery of programs. All of Wellwood’s services are free of charge to everyone.

2010 Community Builders Breakfast

On April 21 at Carmen’s Banquet Centre in Hamilton, in front of several hundred invited guests from the Hamilton business community, Mannat Malik received the SpecKids Unlimited Award. Mannat’s father, three peers from Grades 9, 10 and 11 and two HSC faculty members proudly supported her at the breakfast. The motto of the event was People + Passion = Power. The motto was evident in the youth dance, gymnastic presentation, and the inspiring speeches.

The SpecKids Unlimited Award recognizes a person or group, who, through their long-term efforts as a front-line volunteer, has made a significant contribution to help improve the quality of life for the children and youth of the area. Mannat was the only student among the three nominees for this new Hamilton Spectator award.

Mannat was recognized for her longstanding volunteering for the Settlement and Integration Services Organization, an outstanding HSC student program headed by Madame Heidy Peragine. As a SISO volunteer Mannat has worked since 2007 with young refugees and new comers to Canada helping them to integrate into Canadian society. As Mannat put it, “My involvement with SISO volunteerism has become a dominant force in my life.”

In an impromptu speech this morning, Mannat explained that through helping others she has come to know herself more fully, and has been inspired to see those she has assisted grow and come to know themselves and recognize their potential. She thanked HSC, her family, and her community for the support they have offered over the years.

Well done, Mannat! Keep up the good work.

HSC Student Council helps Habitat for Humanity

Contributed by: Nisha Goel, Grade 11

Last December the HSC Student Council, consisting of Senior School students in Grades 9, 10 and 11, ran the winter dance, the Jingle Bell Jam, and grub day. Recently, the Student Council and the HSC community presented a cheque for $2,845.41 to Mr .Bob McConkey, the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity as a result of their fundraising efforts. The money raised will help support the construction of new homes in Hamilton, which will break ground in the spring.

‘Pure, polished perfection...’certainly describes the Crescendo Concert’s 22nd season.

The 2009-2010 season brought to the Artsplex stage the dazzling Quartetto Gelato, Canadian music icons Murray McLauchlan, Ian Thomas, Cindy Church and Marc Jordan with Lunch at Allen’s and the beautiful jazzy sounds of Laila Biali Trio with Guido Basso.

This sensational season of exceptional talent was orchestrated by the tireless Crescendo Concert Committee, chaired by Anna Johnston. The final concert of the season marked the end of Ms. Johnston’s term as Chair. The HSC community thanks Ms. Johnston, and the entire committee for their passion and commitment to maintaining the vibrancy and quality of the Crescendo Concert series.

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

Nurse’s Notes on H1N1 and influenza-like illness

The Key Points:

  • Symptoms to be concerned about: cough AND fever, as well as the possibility of sore throat, aches/pains and weakness. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may be evident, especially in those under five years of age.
  • Should a student present with these symptoms while at school they should be seen immediately by the school nurse. Anyone with a cough AND fever will be kept in isolation and sent home.
  • If a student presents with a cough AND fever while at home, or has a confirmed case of H1N1 they are not to return to school until they have been fever-free (without the use of medications) for at least 24 hours. Those with a cough can return to school so long as the fever is gone and they feel generally well. However, we ask that those who have been away due to H1N1 and/or influenza-like illness see a school nurse upon return.
  • The school community is encouraged to follow proper “cough etiquette”, as well as proper hand hygiene.

Please look for future HSC communications with more information regarding H1N1 and influenza-like illness.
