Savannah Naturalization – Phase 2

On Wednesday and Thursday before the May long weekend, students from the Grades 11 and 12 Biology classes (and some volunteers) helped supervise Grade 7 Science and Geography classes as well as students from the Junior and Montessori Schools, in planting most of the 2,000 grasses and wildflowers we grew in classrooms throughout the College.

Hundreds of dandelions met their match and were replaced by plugs of six important grass species and more than a dozen kinds of perennials when the Middle School students attacked the older naturalized areas. The younger students planted even more plugs in the de-sodded and roto-tilled strips along Garth Street, where the Grade 10 students planted oak seedlings in April.

These native grassland species will, over time, displace most of the domestic grasses and weeds that have grown up in our naturalized areas, and provide both habitat and beauty around the upper playing fields. The wildflowers will, for the most part, take until next summer to make a display, but already we are seeing an increase in the diversity of birds and insect visiting the naturalized areas.

We also took delivery of nine more large trees that will begin to define another forty meters of our planned one kilometre running path around the upper fields. Four of these trees are dedicated to the Junior School, which raised over $600 with their “Toonies for Trees” campaign on Earth day, and three to the Grade 10 class who paid extra for their dress-down day on Earth Day to provide more trees. A white pine will form the centrepiece of a memorial to Doug Moore, donated by his colleagues.

In all, more than three-quarters of the HSC population will have taken direct action in the growing and planting of our naturalized area this year, and even more will have contributed financially through our fundraisers. While the big goal of contributing to the sustainability and aesthetics of the College community has been moved forward substantially, the secondary goal of mass participation has always been seen as important for creating an environmental ethic and having students feel a sense of pride as they watch the plantings grow and change over the next couple of decades.

Writer- in-Residence Café

On Thursday, May 13, students who have been participating in the Writer-in-Residence Program with author Jean Mills had the opportunity to share their work at a Writers’ Café.  The students have been working with Jean since the beginning of the year to develop their writing skills and polish their work.

The result was an outstanding evening of poetry and prose that was enjoyed by many family and teachers. There are some very talented authors in the Middle School, so it was wonderful for them to have the chance to share their work with the broader community.

Grandparents’ Day

On Friday, May 14 the Junior School invited their grandparents to come for a visit! This biannual event had a wonderful turnout of families. Throughout the day grandparents were treated to classroom visits, displays, short performances, songs and crafts. The smiles on the faces of children and grandparents alike expressed the joy of sharing a school day together. The halls were filled with proud children touring even prouder grandparents!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the grandparents who were able to join us on this day. Click here to share the memories.

The Unfinished Tour

On a very chilly Saturday afternoon in April, five Grade 7 students volunteered to test out a pilot program for young writers at HSC. The students were taken to three locations:  Pier 4 @ Hamilton Harbour Front, Jackson Square & Hamilton Farmers’ Market and finally, Dundurn Castle.  At each location the students were given specific prompts to help to inspire their writing.  Completing pieces on the tour was not the goal (though some did).  The aim was to instil a passion for writing and to create a collection of ideas to be completed at another time.

The tour was a great success. The students had lots of fun and wrote some interesting pieces.  The exciting part is that, as a result, we hope to incorporate tours into the regular English program in the Middle School next year.

Eat Smart Recipe Contest

Bright and early on May 11 HSC’s very own Lynn Sharpe presented her award-winning Vegetarian Chili recipe on CHCH Morning Live.

Workplace cafeteria chefs/cooks were challenged to enter their favourite recipe in the Eat Smart! Recipe Contest. Recipes were required to use vegetables or fruit, provide at least ½ cup of vegetables or fruit per serving, be prepared in a healthier way and be an original recipe of the contestant.

Lynn was joined by fellow winners Mitch Rogal, Executive Chef, Marketplace on Main, McMaster University Medical Centre, Hamilton Health Sciences Volunteer Association, Todd McLeod, Chef, Dana Hospitality Inc. (ArcelorMittal Dofasco), and Sylvia Moser, Chef and Retail Site Manager, Atrium Café, Henderson Hospital, Hamilton Health Sciences Volunteer Association.

The Eat Smart Workplace Program is a Provincial program that promotes the availability of healthy eating choices in workplace cafeterias.  HSC is one of eight participating workplaces in Hamilton, and was the first educational institution in this Region to be so designated.

One School, One Book

This year the Junior School launched their first annual One School, One Book family reading event.  This program was started in the United States and was based on the One City, One Book model. Our participation in this initiative was to encourage families to read together.

This year we selected a classic novel, Cricket in Times Square, by George Selden. At the launch families were invited to come in their pyjamas for the introduction of the program and to begin to read the novel. All families and Junior School staff members received a copy of the book and a schedule to follow at home.

Families were invited also to explore our fun webquest. Teachers supported the daily reading by asking their students trivia questions at school. The novels were returned to school upon completion and will be donated to a local school in need. This event garnered lots of positive feedback from our HSC families and staff. We are excited to continue reading together.

Next year, we are keeping the novel top secret until the launch.  Stay tuned for clues along the way...

We can’t wait to send you on another reading adventure!

Youth Exchange Host Family Needed for 2010-2011 School Year

The Rotary Club of Hamilton is actively involved with Rotary International’s Youth Exchange Program.  Each year the Club, with close connections to HSC,  hosts a student from another country for a one-year period.   Similarly the Club selects a student from Hamilton to go on an exchange to another country.   This year Rotary is hosting  Filip,  a 17-year old from Sweden, who will attend Hillfield Strathallan College.   The Rotary Youth Exchange Committee is looking for host families for Filip, typically for a 2-3 month period.  Members of the Rotary Club of Hamilton will offer to host, but we would like to also appeal to HSC families to consider offering a place in your home for Filip as a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to experience hosting an international student.

Hillfield Strathallan College is an active supporter of Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program - each year we sponsor one student to attend the College, and over the years these students have enriched the global life of the College in many ways.   Filip will become a part of our HSC family next year, and if  you are interested in hosting or would like to learn more about what would be involved, please contact Adrienne Davidson, Director of College Advancement at HSC.
