Frid Way - A new road on campus?

Not a new road, but a new name! In honour of HSC Patron, Dr. John Frid (1924-2008), the road leading past our Transportation Office and over to Maintenance will be known as “Frid Way.” A sign and a lamp post to mark the location will be erected shortly. Dr. Frid devoted 33 years of service to HSC on our Board of Governors, and was an Honorary Life Member of our Board. At the 2008 HSC Builders’ Dinner he was also made a Patron of the College – our highest honour. On that occasion John summarized his educational philosophy, one which guided his professional life for more than half a century at McMaster University, Mohawk College and at Hillfield Strathallan College:
“Students must be able to construct and own knowledge, not just memorize information for tests.”
Our current Strategic Plan was very much guided by Dr. Frid, and was dedicated in his honour as a commitment to student-centred learning. Dr. Tom Matthews commented at the celebration of life service for Dr. Frid:
“…the fact that John had no personal connection to the College, either as an alumnus or as a school parent was impressive. His commitment was entirely altruistic—a natural extension of a lifetime of service. And he never lost his sense of humour, no matter how difficult the circumstances. On April 29 2008, when he was inducted as a Patron, we discovered upon his arrival at the College that John was too weak to walk up the stairs to Lawson Hall. However, we managed to find a group of hardy volunteers to carry him up the stairs and, although he must have been in terrible pain, he put everyone at ease by declaring as he arrived at the top of the stairs; “Now, that was an uplifting experience!”
Sadly Dr. Frid passed away just weeks after his induction as a Patron, but he will always be remembered at the College through this naming recognition. In addition, a specimen tree will be planted on the College grounds bearing a plaque with the above quotation.
A true friend of this great school, Dr. John Frid was a man of enormous intelligence, vision, and passion for life.
Two more roads on campus form part of the naming opportunities associated with donations to the “Transformation HSC” capital campaign. For further information on this, please contact Adrienne Davidson, Director of College Advancement at 905-389-1367, ext. 162 or adrienne.davidson@hsc.on.ca

Colin B. Glassco Foundation Presentations
Contributed by Emily Ower and Nisha Goel.
For several years, HSC has been fostering a unique connection between our school community and the orphans at the Chihiwasha orphanage in Zambia. The connection stems from the Colin B.Glassco Foundation, founded by Old Boy Colin B. Glassco ’61. The foundation focuses its efforts in the Gwembe Valley of Zambia, providing safe, progressive and sustainable living for the population through the construction of wells, schools, medical clinics and an orphanage.
Inspired by Mr. Glassco’s vision, a group of students in the Senior School formed a fundraising group to contribute to this amazing organization that uses every dollar donated directly for those in need. In 2008 they set a goal of raising enough funds for the construction of a well. The overwhelming support from the HSC community through dances, alternate dress days, bake sales, water bottle sales and coin wars truly showed the compassion present here at HSC. They raised $18 000, enough money for not only the construction of a well, but also enough to feed each child living at the orphanage breakfast every day for a year.
This year the students continued to focus on fostering a relationship with those at the orphanage by continuing to feed over 120 children every day. In addition to their usual fundraising initiatives, the students launched a campaign called ‘Hands to Hands,’ where members of the HSC community had the opportunity to sponsor the cost of breakfast for a child living at the orphanage. Branching outside its immediate community, the group also forged business relationships with organizations such as the Rotary Club and Taylor Trucking and Shipping to raise additional funds. Overall the students surpassed their goal of $10,000, with a final total of $11, 046 which was presented in chapel to Dr. Matthews on behalf of the foundation.
The group is proud to have achieved this ambitious goal two years in a row, and looks forward to forging a stronger bond with the children at the orphanage. As those who sponsored a child will know, just hearing the name and the age of a child is often enough to break cross-cultural differences and share what is common to us all, hope. The fundraising group is excited to continue providing a spark of hope in each and every child’s life at the orphanage.
A presentation was made to the Headmaster by the Colin B. Glassco Foundation on behalf of Colin Glassco himself. Dr. Matthews was presented with a plaque and a letter displaying Colin Glassco’s appreciation for everything the HSC community has done in the past few years in support of the foundation. The plaque contained pictures of the well which Colin had built in honour of HSC and its contributions. Both these items were sent and put together personally by Mr. Glassco in gratitude for all that the HSC community has contributed.

HSC African Relief Day

On May 24, 2010 the HSC student community held HSC African Relief Day, led by the Middle School.
In the Junior School the students were asked to donate pairs of shoes, specifically flip-flops to an orphanage in Zambia. Flip-flops are preferred as they are not restrictive and even if they are a bit too small, they can be worn without causing damage to the foot. Through our connection with the Colin B. Glassco Foundation we will send the shoes to the Chishawasha Orphange in a remote area of Zambia. Staff and students in the Junior School enjoyed a day to dress down and wear their favourite pair of flip-flops and were encouraged to bring in a new pair to be donated to the orphanage. At the end of the day the Junior School had collected 435 pairs!
The Montessori School celebrated the College-wide African Relief Day with an African Market. The Montessori teachers made handicrafts with an African theme including jewelry, hackysacks and mancala games for the children to purchase. There were also sweets and face painting. It was like an African dollar store complete with music and decorations and raised $700 for the Olive Branch.
It was a wonderful experience for the children and the staff alike as the proceeds went to The Olive Branch for Children. The Olive Branch runs teacher training programs and Montessori schools in Tanzania. The group has a special connection to HSC as one of its teachers Laure Kominar spent some time with them in Tanzania on her recent sabbatical. Mrs. Kominar will be returing to Tanzania this summer and will be bringing the students photos of our market and handicrafts the children have made for them.
Led by the Human Development Committee, House Captains and Grade 7 House Captain Candidates, students in the Middle School participated in a Lip Sync competition in the Artsplex. Students purchased tickets to vote for their favourite acts. In addition, students donated money to purchase bricks for supporting a village in Africa. Each brick cost $5.00. All the funds raised will support Free the Children.
In addition to a number of events held throughout the year, the Senior School held an alternate dress day to raise additional funds in support of Free the Children and The Colin B. Glassco Foundation.

CISAA U-16 Soccer Report
The U-16 Girls’ Soccer team capped off a very exciting season by hosting the CISAA Junior Girls Soccer Championships at HSC on Saturday, May 29, 2010. HSC was chosen to host after the girls finished the regular season undefeated in all four of their games.
The semi-finals saw the HSC girls face their bitter rivals, Lakefield College School. It was a nervy start to the game, but Alana Camporese settled the girls down with a firm strike off of a corner by Alex Maly. The girls then went ahead 2-0 before half-time, after Alex Maly netted her first of four of the day. Lakefield came out very strong in the second half, but our consistently strong defence of Alex Rocca, Shelbie Reid, Laura Malatesta, Kate Bauer and Brooklyn Joyce fought hard to keep the ball out of the net.
Unfortunately, Lakefield scored in the middle of the second half from a very nicely placed free kick. However, with continued strong defending and great saves from Sarah El-Kaissi, the HSC girls saw the game finish 2-1 in regulation time.
That set the girls up for the final game versus St. John’s Kilmarnock. The game got under way quickly with a goal from Alex Maly, followed by one from Riley O’Connell and then another two from Alex Maly to complete her hat-trick. It ended that way at half time and in the second half, SJK prevented us from scoring, but were no match for our strong defence and the game finished 4-0.
Mr. Dawn and Ms. Cicchetti would like to congratulate and thank all the girls on a fantastic season and a great championship day. All the girls played hard and contributed to the success of the team throughout the season. We are very proud of them all.

Reading in the Forest

This year more than 300 students from JK to Grade 8 participated in the Forest of Reading Program™ sponsored by the Ontario Library Association (OLA). In the fall, the OLA nominates recently published Canadian books. Students from across Ontario are invited to read a minimum of five out of the ten titles and vote for their favourite book.
This year, the HSC Library offered titles from the Blue Spruce, Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch and Red Maple programs. Each program had its own voting day where participants were invited to dine and vote in the library during their scheduled lunch period.
Congratulations to the winners at this year’s Forest of Reading Awards!
Blue Spruce: Jeremy Tankard for Boo Hoo Bird
Silver Birch Express: Cyndi Sand-Eveland for Dear Toni
Silver Birch Non-Fiction: Larry Verstraete for At the Edge: Daring Acts in Desperate Times
Silver Birch Fiction: Robert Paul Weston for Zorgamazoo
Red Maple: Susan Nielsen for Word Nerd
This is a fantastic program that exposes children to Canadian literature from various genres while promoting reading at all levels.
