At HSC we strive to provide an abundance of artistic activities, so that all of our students will be moved to explore their talents. Drama, music, visual arts, creative writing, photography, creative design, and poetry are among the many offerings at HSC.

Arts at HSC

All young people should have the opportunity to enjoy an education that includes the arts.  It is a right, not a privilege. Whether it is through visual creation, movement, dramatic communication, or making music, students who are actively engaged in the arts develop creativity, self-expression, and resiliency, all of which are vital aspects of a child's growth in preparation to making positive and meaningful contributions in the world.  Additionally, involvement in the arts challenges students to stretch outside their comfort zone.
There are few things more inspiring than witnessing the sense of empowerment a student feels when they finally master a difficult musical passage after hours of rehearsal, fully immerse themselves in a complex character, or realize the creation of a truly unique and original work of art.
Every child is an artist.  The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.
- P. Picasso
HSC is a place where students experience an integrated approach to the arts from the very start.  When exposed to multiple artistic opportunities, our students are able to discover an area of interest, which, with the support of our faculty, develops into a passion.

Creative writing, design, drama, music, photography, poetry and visual arts are just a few of the many offerings available to students at HSC as they progress through the College. Students are afforded several opportunities to display their artistic talents within the College community and are encouraged to share their passion with communities outside the walls of HSC.

The experiences shared and memories made during their time at HSC instills in our students a lifelong love and appreciation for the arts long after the last note is performed, brush stroked, or final curtain is lowered.

  • Dramatic Arts

HSC has a long history of presenting full length musicals and dramatic productions. Each year all four schools - Montessori, Junior, Middle and Senior - prepare and produce presentations that allow students the opportunity for self-expression, and creative output. Recent productions have included Grease, Cabaret, Arsenic and Old Lace, Tom, Dick and Harry, The Little Mermaid Jr., and Annie Jr.

Students in the Senior School can choose from a variety of drama courses that explore developmental drama, mime, and improvisation.
  • Music

From the youngest ages, through to graduation, HSC students enjoy participating in the art of music.

In the Montessori School and Junior School, singing is integrated into much of the curriculum, as well as in public presentations. The Junior Choir is an active group, and often sings in the greater Hamilton community. Singing is often accompanied by creative movement and Orff instruments.

As students move into the Middle School, their musical horizons expand.  Instrumental music study begins in Grade 6, and the Middle School Choir plays an important role in College functions, especially Carol Service. Middle School instrumental ensembles include the Grade 6/7 Concert Band, Grade 8 Concert Band, and the Middle School Jazz Band. These groups perform often at local music festivals and HSC events.

In the Senior School, students choose from an abundance of music courses that include vocal music, instrumental music, and jazz. HSC Senior ensembles have consistently earned Gold Standards in music festivals locally and internationally.
Each year there are school musicals prepared and presented in the Middle School and Senior School that delight and enthrall audiences. Wonderful sets, and costumes compliment the skills of HSC students in order to bring Broadway to HSC.

HSC promotes the private study of music at the College. Students can choose to study piano, or any string, wind or percussion instrument from an impressive array of the areas top professional musicians and teachers. It is all right here at HSC.
  • Technology Education

Technological Education at HSC is a two strand program. The Design curriculum enables students to understand the technological and computer concepts as they relate to the design process, and how to test and evaluate design solutions when building functional products. Students also acquire the basic design skills required for post-secondary studies in engineering, manufacturing, architecture and construction as they progress through the curriculum.

The Communication strand is a Multimedia curriculum based on the latest software technology used in industry. Students complete a range of projects in the areas of graphical information displays, 3-D (computer generated) animation, web design, videography and printed stationary. Students study industry standards, explore post-secondary career options and examine the impact of Communications Technology on society and the environment. The integral part of this programme is being part of the Boar Pibroch (yearbook) team. Students develop computer and organizational skills, as well as marketing and business processes, through the production of the yearbook.
  • Visual Arts

The basis of visual arts is the application of the elements and principles of design, which is the underlying learning outcome for the Visual Arts program at HSC.  Creative and design processes and the relationship between form and content, as well as the connections between work of art and their historical contexts, are explored through studio activities as the students progress through their study of visual arts.  Western art, Canadian art and art forms from various parts of the world are explored and analysed in increasing detail as students progress through the program.

Our vision is to provide enriching opportunities to prepare students for the challenges in the Visual Arts Programe. We help them maximize their potential as innovators, leaders and creative artists within the Visual Arts by offering art-based school and community experiences. We ensure that they graduate with transferable skills as well as with an educational experience that is unique to Hillfield Strathallan College.

Located in Hamilton, ON, Hillfield Strathallan College is a Canadian independent, co-educational day school. The academic program runs from Montessori Toddler and Pre-K to Grade 12.
