Traditions
Our Legacy of Character
and Community
Traditions are the vibrant threads that weave through our history, connecting generations of students, families, and alumni. They are more than just customs; they are living expressions of our values, fostering a deep sense of belonging, celebrating shared experiences, and shaping the very character of an HSC graduate.
Our traditions are the bedrock of the HSC identity, celebrating our shared past, enriching our present, and inspiring the generations of “good people” who will shape our future. – Marc Ayotte, Head of College
HSC’s rich legacy began with the independent foundations of Hillfield School for Boys (1901) and Strathallan School for Girls (1923). These pioneering institutions, each with their own distinct character and commitment to academic rigour, laid the groundwork for the unified Hillfield Strathallan College, established in 1962. This amalgamation created a co-educational environment that combined the strengths of both predecessors, forging a new path for holistic education in Hamilton. Our roots inform our present, providing a powerful sense of continuity and a foundation built on over a century of educational excellence.
HSC is a big place, but our cherished House System ensures every student finds their close-knit community. It’s one of our oldest and most successful traditions, designed to connect students through common goals and a shared sense of identity, fostering a true “College within a College.”
The House System provides a seamless continuum for mentoring, special activities, service, and friendly competition across all our schools. Every student belongs to one of four brother/sister House combinations: Maple/Tay, Cedar/More, Birch/Earn, or Pine/Yre! Each House also boasts its own distinct colour – red, blue, orange, or yellow – and is uniquely named for a Canadian tree or a Scottish river, a special nod to HSC’s founders. We take pride in placing family members in the same House across generations, strengthening these bonds even further.
Each House is a vibrant community, carefully supervised by dedicated staff members and led by enthusiastic student House officials. New students are warmly welcomed and sorted into a House early in the school year, quickly becoming part of their new family. In the Middle School, student Co-Captains are democratically voted into office by their peers and faculty, empowering student leadership.
Throughout the school year, our students compete together for a variety of House points, actively contributing to their House through achievements in academics, co-curricular activities, and community service. Points are awarded for these contributions, recognizing individual effort that benefits the collective. Throughout the year, awards are granted at various levels of point accumulation, and prestigious prizes are presented annually to the Houses that contribute the most to College life, celebrating their spirit and dedication.
HSC boasts a vast and meticulously maintained archive – a treasure trove of documents, photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia that chronicle over 120 years of our College’s history. From early school records and vintage uniforms to yearbooks and architectural plans, these archives are a living testament to the evolution of our institution and the countless lives it has touched. They serve as an invaluable resource for current students, faculty, alumni, and researchers, offering a tangible link to the past and inspiring future generations to uphold our traditions.
The moment a student graduates from HSC, they become part of an extraordinary, robust alumni community that spans the globe. Our alumni are not just former students; they are active ambassadors, mentors, and lifelong friends who embody the values instilled during their time at the College. This powerful network offers:
- Lifelong Connections: Opportunities to reconnect with classmates and forge new relationships at events, reunions, and through dedicated alumni platforms.
- Mentorship & Support: Through programs like HSC Connect, alumni generously offer guidance, career insights, and networking opportunities to current students and recent graduates.
- Shared Legacy: Alumni play a crucial role in preserving HSC’s traditions and contributing to its future success, often through volunteering, philanthropy, and sharing their unique stories.
This enduring bond ensures that the HSC experience extends far beyond graduation.
