Program Descriptions



PBL 101

For teachers, school and district leaders, and instructional coaches.

The PBL 101 Workshop is the best way to begin your journey into Project Based Learning. This workshop is based on tried and true strategies for developing learning experiences for educators that lead to sustained changes in practice.

PBL 101 is PBLWorks' foundational course, based on our model of Gold Standard PBL. The workshop itself models the project process. It provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to design, assess, and manage a rigorous, standards-based project. Educators consistently rate our PBL 101 Workshop as exceptional.

THE WORKSHOP
During this workshop, you will:
  • Understand the distinction between “doing projects” and Project Based Learning
  • Incorporate best practices in formative and summative assessment into project designs
  • Become familiar with online project design, assessment and management resources
  • Learn to use peer-driven feedback protocols
  • Draft a standards-based project design, including key success skills, a driving question, and major student products, that is ready to implement in your classroom
This three-day workshop is a blend of direct instruction, video analysis, hands-on work, resource sharing, and peer collaboration and feedback. Your workshop will be facilitated by a member of the PBLWorks' National Faculty—all seasoned teachers, administrators, and coaches who are PBL experts.


PBL 201

For teachers, coaches, curriculum specialists, school & district leaders.

Prerequisite: PBLWorks' PBL 101 Workshop

PBL 201 Workshops are three-day onsite workshops that provide experienced PBL practitioners with in-depth instruction on PBLWorks' Gold Standard Project Based Teaching Practices as well as supported project development time. Participants​ ​will​ ​leave​ ​each​ ​workshop with​ ​the​ ​beginnings​ ​of​ ​a​ ​new​ ​project​ ​as​ ​well​ ​as​ ​a​ ​deeper​ ​understanding​ ​of​ ​effective​ ​PBL facilitation​ ​practices.

INDICATE YOUR FIRST AND SECOND CHOICE OUT OF THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS (please note that we cannot guarantee your first choice):
 
Option 1: Building a Learner-Centered Classroom
Focus on teaching Practices: Align to Standards, Build the Culture, Manage Activities, Assess Student Learning

In this active and participatory learning experience, educators will learn strategies for increasing the engagement and empowerment of all students in the PBL classroom. Experienced PBL educators who attend this workshop will learn to skillfully plan for student choice throughout a project and to use management structures that place student learning at the center. They will reflect on the use of peer feedback as a tool for student empowerment and distributed expertise in the classroom. Workshop attendees will apply the practices they learn to the development of a high-quality standards-aligned project and a plan for learner-centered project implementation in their classrooms.

Option 2: Deepening​ ​the​ ​Quality​ ​of​ ​Student​ ​Work

Focus Teaching Practices: Align to Standards, Scaffold Student Learning, Engage & Coach, Assess Student Learning
 
How do we ensure that the products we ask students to create are rigorous and align to significant content and skills? What project-embedded strategies can help deepen student thinking and elicit evidence of this thinking? How can we coach students toward ever-increasing levels of intellectual rigor and quality work? In this engaging and interactive workshop, participants will investigate and apply teaching practices and strategies that can help to strengthen the quality of student work in a PBL classroom. They will develop and reflect on a high-quality project, and will plan for project implementation in order to improve student products and enhance learning.

Facilitated by one of PBLWorks' expert National Faculty, each PBL 201 workshop offers a balanced blend of direct instruction, video analysis, hands-on work, resource sharing, and peer collaboration and feedback.


PBL Leadership

Requirements: Participants must be in a school or district leadership role. It is highly recommended that participants come in teams of at least three.

The PBL Leadership Workshop is a three-day intensive dive into how school and district leaders support the conditions for Project Based Learning to thrive in their systems. Reflecting on their current reality, participants will design their strategy to implement PBL and foster a project based mindset for teaching, learning and leading that moves them forward along the PBL Leadership Progression of Practice.

THE WORKSHOP
During this workshop, you will:
  • Experience PBL as a learner
  • Identify key actions that will guide PBL implementation and move the school as well as advance leadership practices along the PBL Progression of Practice continuum
  • Understand and explain how Gold Standard PBL aligns to your district vision/strategic plan
  • Collaborate as a network of leaders to build coherence and capacity to move PBL implementation forward
Facilitated by one of PBLWorks' expert National Faculty, the workshop is a balanced blend of direct instruction, videos from the field, hands-on work, resource sharing, and peer collaboration and feedback.
