Arts Program

“The Arts empower us to lead rich and fulfilling lives. They help us to understand our world by holding a mirror up to our shared humanity. They are the lifeblood of a meaningful educational experience."
 - Nora Hammond, HSC Director of Arts
ARTS PROGRAM
At HSC, we nurture imagination and creativity from the first day of school through a robust and diverse arts program.
Early exposure to a variety of artistic opportunities allows students to discover areas of interest and, with support of HSC’s faculty, develop a passion for creative expression. Whether through visual arts, movement, dramatic communication or music, students across all four schools develop the creativity, self-expression and personal resilience necessary to make positive and meaningful contributions in the world.

HSC’s arts program is taught by accomplished specialists who encourage students to share their passion beyond the walls of our College. Students can get involved with major theatrical productions, award-winning choral groups and bands or visual arts committees. Below is a detailed description of HSC’s arts program offerings:

Dramatic Arts

Each year, all four HSC schools (Montessori, Junior, Middle and Senior) prepare and present dramatic productions that allow students the opportunity for self expression and creative output. Past productions have included Grease, Cabaret, The Little Mermaid Jr. and Annie Jr. among others. Wonderful sets and costumes compliment the skills of HSC students in order to bring Broadway to HSC. Senior School students can choose from a variety of drama courses that explore developmental drama, mime and improvisation.

Music

Music appreciation starts in HSC’s Montessori and Junior Schools with singing integrated into much of the curriculum, often accompanied by creative movement and Orff instruments. Our Junior Choir is actively involved in public performances around the greater Hamilton area. Instrumental music study begins in Grade 6 and the Middle School Choir plays an important role in College functions, especially HSC’s annual Carol Service. Middle School instrumental ensembles include the Grade 6/7 Concert Band, Grade 8 Concert Band and the Middle School Jazz Band. These groups perform often at local music festivals and HSC events.

In Senior School, students choose from an abundance of music courses that include vocal music, instrumental music, and jazz. HSC Senior ensembles have consistently earned Gold Standards in music festivals locally and internationally. Each year there are school musicals prepared and presented in the Middle School and Senior School that delight and enthrall audiences. HSC also offers the private study of music, where students can choose to study piano or any string, wind or percussion instrument from an impressive array of the areas top professional musicians and teachers.

Technology Education

Technological Education at HSC is a two strand program. The Design curriculum enables students to understand the technological and computer concepts as they relate to the design process, and how to test and evaluate design solutions when building functional products. Students also acquire the basic design skills required for post-secondary studies in engineering, manufacturing, architecture and construction as they progress through the curriculum.

The Communication strand is a Multimedia curriculum based on the latest software technology used in industry. Students complete a range of projects in the areas of graphical information displays, 3-D (computer generated) animation, web design, videography and printed stationary. Students study industry standards, explore post-secondary career options and examine the impact of Communications Technology on society and the environment. The integral part of this program is being part of the Boar Pibroch (yearbook) team. Students develop computer and organizational skills, as well as marketing and business processes, through the production of the yearbook.

Visual Arts

The basis of HSC’s visual arts program is the application of the elements and principles of design. We help students maximize their potential as innovators, leaders and creative artists within Visual Arts by offering art-based school and community experiences. We ensure that they graduate with transferable skills as well as with an educational experience that is unique to HSC. Creative and design processes and the relationship between form and content, as well as the connections between works of art and their historical contexts are explored through studio activities as the students progress through their study of visual arts.  Western art, Canadian art and art forms from various parts of the world are explored and analysed in increasing detail as students progress through the program.
